VOTE: How Did Billy Crystal Do as Oscar Host?

Billy Crystal was back Sunday night to host his ninth Academy Awards and first since 2004. The comedian, who stepped in to replace Eddie Murphy after he dropped out in November, opened the show with one of his signature parodies of the year's nominated films -- a pre-taped video in which he amusingly inserted himself into key scenes from the best picture contestants. That bit -- which he first introduced (to raves) at the 1997 Oscars -- set the tone for the evening, as familiar and comfortable as a favorite old sweatshirt.

A Walk Through The Grisedale Valley - Travel - EzineMark

The Grisedale Valley, much loved by Wordsworth, is well worth exploring especially if you have your dog in tow, they?ll love running over the fells and taking a dip in the tarns as they run along. There are several dog friendly Lake District cottages in the area which would make the ideal base from which to explore this wonderful valley.

Set off from Patterdale village and head deeper into the valley towards what is known as Grisedale Forest despite the very apparent lack of trees. You will pass Ruthwaite Lodge, a climbing hut on your right as you make your way through rocky scenery towards Grisedale Tarn. The imposing craggy face of Dollywagon Pike looms above but wait for your photo opportunity, it is even better further on.

Just off the path before the tarn is Brother?s Parting Stone and much easier to spot from this direction.

A poem is inscribed into the stone though it is weatherworn and largely unintelligible. The stone is said to mark the spot where William Wordsworth and his brother John last saw each other before John drowned at sea.

As you reach Grisedale Tarn cross the stepping stones to the left and walk clockwise around the tarn towards Hause Gap and follow the clear path alongside the wall to the summit of Fairfield. Due to the rocky nature of the summit and various piles of stones, shelters and paths in many directions, a map and compass are essential to get off the summit safely in poor conditions.

There are many shelters on Fairfield for a lunch stop and are perfect to survey the view.? The next leg of the walk heads downwards over Cofa Pike a rocky pinnacle between Fairfield and St Sunday Crag.

From here don?t forget to look back to Dollywagon Pike across the valley for the impressive view of the craggy face.

The descent from St Sunday Crag offers several choices, a straight down descent from Birks to Elm How Plantation, however my preference is to walk down over Birks towards Trough Head and through the interesting rocky tops of Arnison Crags. This route takes you straight down into the garden and carpark of the Patterdale Hotel, which is a perfect place to stop for a well deserved pint or cup of tea in the welcoming bar.

There are several Lake District cottages in the area which are ideally situated to give you a great base from which to explore Grisedale and other surrounding valleys.

Cheap Travel Insurance? | Travel Tips, Questions And Answers ...

From Mike H - H.S. Teacher:

I agree with God B,

Medical care in Asia is very cheap. When I was is SE Asia I had Landa travelers insurance. I never used it but it cost $120 for 30 days of coverage.

When I was in Costa Rica I feel off a horse and broke my arm and cracked my head open! (2 weeks in the hospital) Landa paid for all my medical expenses and my early flight home. In that situation it would have cost about $2000 but the insurance paid it all.

Cancer therapy more potent when it hits 2 targets

Friday, February 24, 2012

Simultaneous targeting of two different molecules in cancer is an effective way to shrink tumors, block invasion, and stop metastasis, scientists at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) have found?work that may improve the effectiveness of combination treatments that include drugs like Avastin.

The two-target approach, tested in mice with a type of cancer known as neuroendocrine pancreatic tumors, may have broad application for treating a wide variety of cancers, the UCSF team said. The drugs used in the tests belong to classes of pharmaceuticals that are either on the market or under development in clinical trials.

Clinical trials also are already underway to gauge effectiveness of the approach in humans with prostate cancer, breast cancer, and other tumor types. The UCSF study, described in the journal Cancer Discovery this week, is the first to show how the drug combination works in the laboratory.

The results are promising, said Donald McDonald, MD, PhD, a member of the UCSF Helen Diller Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Cardiovascular Research Institute and professor of anatomy, who led the research.

In the study, treating mice with the dual-target approach turned aggressive tumors with invasive fingers penetrating surrounding tissues and many metastases into tiny balls with few or no metastases.

"It's the combination of approaches?there's a synergy between the two," McDonald said. "You add two and two, and you get 10."

How each target works

The two targets are both proteins that scientists have known for years are involved in cancer. Both play important roles in malignant tumors.

The first, called c-MET, is involved in two processes associated with the most deadly cancers. A clinical marker of cancer aggressiveness, c-MET drives tumor invasion into surrounding tissues. It is also involved in metastasis?the spread of cancer cells to other parts of the body where they can establish new tumors.

The second target is a protein known as vascular endothelial cell growth factor (VEGF). VEGF is a protein that promotes the growth of new blood vessels. Growing tumors hijack this process to expand their network of blood vessels to provide nutrients. Drugs blocking VEGF have been developed based on the simple assumption that tumors cannot grow if you choke off their blood supply.

Drugs that target these molecules are in development, and a few are already on the market. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first of these in 2004 to treat metastatic colon cancer. That drug, called Avastin, is manufactured by the South San Francisco-based company Genentech. Avastin was approved for metastatic breast cancer in 2008 under the FDA's accelerated approval program.

The FDA revoked approval of Avastin for breast cancer last year after further assessing the relative risks and benefits to women taking it. Blocking VEGF seemed to slow tumor growth for awhile, but the FDA determined that it did not significantly improve or extend the lives of most women taking it.

"It was not clear why some tumors responded and others did not. It was also unclear why some tumors would respond initially and then would stop responding," said McDonald, who has studied blood vessels in tumors and the effect of cancer drugs for years in his UCSF laboratory.

Two years ago former UCSF professor Douglas Hanahan and colleagues found in laboratory experiments that Avastin-like drugs would shrink tumors but unexpectedly did something else as well. The drugs also morphed tumors from roundish blobs into highly irregular growths with tendrils that penetrated surrounding tissues and even spread to other organs?suggesting that the VEGF blockade could also make tumors more aggressive, invasive and metastatic.

McDonald's group confirmed Hanahan's findings and discovered that c-MET was involved. In their latest research, Barbara Sennino, PhD, with other investigators in his group set out to determine whether c-MET drove tumor aggressiveness during anti-VEGF therapy. What their paper shows is that blocking c-MET and VEGF together in mice is more powerful than blocking either alone because it not only slows tumor growth but also reduces invasion and metastasis.

They tested two inhibitors of VEGF?a neutralizing antibody and sunitinib?and three inhibitors of c-MET?crizotinib, PF-04217903, and cabozantinib (XL184). Unlike the other agents, cabozantinib simultaneously inhibits both c-MET and VEGF. Inhibition of c-MET and VEGF together with a drug combination or with cabozantinib had more profound effects on tumors than any of the agents that blocked only one of the targets.

These promising laboratory results still need more tests of safety and effectiveness in the clinic, McDonald said, and it may be a year or more before the drugs are routinely available to patients.

8 lessons for living a full life (The Week)

[unable to retrieve full-text content]The Week - We have much to learn, says Karl Pillemer, from people who have led long, happy livesWE ARE ON the verge of losing an irreplaceable natural resource. The inexorable process of human aging is depriving us of one of the most extraordinary groups of human beings that has ever lived: America's older generation. The last veteran of World War I has died; those of World War II are now in their 80s. The youngest children of the Great Depression have reached their late 70s. When this generation has passed, where will we go to recover the lessons they learned about life? For five years, I have collected the advice and wisdom of over a thousand of our elders — "experts," as I call them — about surviving and thriving in a difficult world. Here is what eight of them had to say.

To Have E12 LED Home Lighting ? Here's A Basic Yet To The Point ...

Lots of houses possess this sort of fixture in kitchens, bath rooms, hallways including basements ? any spot that needs to be brightly lighted.

LED units also work clearly in strips, so they are excellent beneath kitchen devices and interior of drawers. Also rendering off almost no heat. They release extremely bright lighting when needed in a fairly bounded area rather than extended broadly.

What E12 LED lights are at present less adept at is in general illumination ? from say, a counter top lamp having a lamp shade.

Key point one: keep to exactly what E12 LED home lighting presently does. It produces better, shiny directional lighting effects.

Something which confuses nearly all people concerning E12 LED lights is ?color?. This is not the color as in green and orange ? it is usually ?white color?. E12 LED lamps come in various ?white colors? ? from soft, warm illumination to a more lucid, colder effect.

As a rough help, ?warm white? E12 LED lights give good result inside the house while ?cool white? is a great option for outdoor LED lighting the place you typically intend crisper definition and brightness that approximates daytime.

Key point two: fully grasp the E12 LED light ?color? system.

Next, we have to input power ratings or wattage. We are used to knowing that 100w is shiny while 40w is appropriate at lounge maybe and 10w is primarily a courtesy light. But residential E12 LED lighting doesn?t comply with this scale for the reason that E12 LED light bulbs involve very low power consumption considering nearly all their input power is converted to light and hardly any energy power is squandered as heat.

To change a 50w halogen light (both MR16 and GU10 fixtures are widely available for LED equivalent replacement units) you would be looking at a LED spot light rated at 7w. Raise to a 12w LED and you?re taking on a standard floodlight.

You have a further difficulty to carefully consider. The particular LED ?color? affects how vivid it actually appears to human eyes ? cool shades seem sharper and evidently brighter than warm colors. Mentally balance the wattage equivalent up or down a small fraction as per the LED color.

Key point three: E12 LED bulbs are small energy units, so get used to a significantly lower wattage level.

In conjunction with color and wattage, the angle of the light beam from a particular E12 LED lamp has developed a major impact on how it may look and how brilliant it appears.

A reduced angle of less than 40 degrees will target all of its light onto a restricted area which will therefore turn up to be very bright. Huge angle of 70 to 120 degrees is going to cast light over a wider area and thus a lot more space will be irradiated but less brilliantly.

Key point four: consider the beam angle of any LED lamp.

Finally, you may ask where to buy LED home lighting. If you are new to indoor LED lighting then the reply is: at anyplace you can actually see the E12 LED light unit in any case a good image so you can assess how a specific LED application will appear in your house prior to buying it.

As opposed to conventional light bulbs, LED home lighting is a long term investment which will conserve a lot of money in the years to come but the costs are all in advance, since most E12 LED lights actually less expensive to run than to purchase. They endure for a very, very long time which means you do not want to make a quick purchase you could be caught with for years.

If you are looking to purchase a TV set for your son's birthday you might want to go towards one engineered for gaming. And, if you are going to be playing video games on your TV you want one with 120 Hz which is the refresh rate on the screen; with 120 Hz you can play games comfortably and with no ghosting Because most video games move extremely fast, some screens with lower Hz really can't handle it, so remember that! Remember to check the dimensions of the TV and to measure the spot you are going to be placing it in. It is equally advisable to take precaution by determining the room of the house where the set will be fixed. The dimensions of the room and the television location spot can influence your choice of TV and it is better to check everything rather than returning the television because it does not fit, can lead to many other uncomfortable situations.

Another thing to consider is if you are going in the LCD and LED direction or Plasma road. Now there are a couple of advantages to both types of television technologies. It really depends on what you prefer. If you prefer TV sets that highlight the darker area of images, Plasma TV will be your choice. Plasma TVs also allow you to see the image clearly at difficult angles, if you are doing the dishes for example. Moreover, if you are one the consumers that like to save on power and thereby reduce expenses, LCD or LED televisions will be good for you; they have been designed to help save energy and they are budget friendly when it comes to using them. I personally think that LED TVs are of the highest quality particularly those from the brand names such as Samsung and LG and this opinion can be corroborated by the different studies that gave the same conclusion.

Remember when purchasing a TV you want to do your research online first and go to the store with a general idea of what you are looking for. Ask for some help from a technology expert as well, and just check out the TVs you are interested in in personal. Another reflex that will pay you is to revert back to the web and compare prices of your chosen HDTV as you stand the chance of making some savings.

If you are looking into purchasing a quality LED-LCD (awesome technology) TV then the best place to start would be the LG 55LW5600 HDTV. I am personally awed at the ingenuity displayed in that TV; follow the link and read the review of that product. Another awesome component to add to your entertainment cent would be the Logitech Revue; this little gadget allows you to link your computer and TV and do all kinds of cool stuff.

(AP) ? Morocco's pro-democracy February 20 movement spearheaded the country's version of the Arab Spring and sent the centuries-old monarchy scrambling to reform. Now, a year after its birth, the youth-led group appears to have lost its way.

And while the movement struggles for relevance, Morocco's problems are far from solved: Social discontent and clashes between police and unemployed graduates are on the rise as the economy suffers from the effects of Europe's financial crisis.

Like the Occupy movements in the United States, Morocco's pro-democracy groups now need to find out if they can keep the fight going.

On Sunday, the movement will try with countrywide anniversary demonstrations to rekindle some of the fire that at its peak in March put 800,000 people from all walks of life on the streets calling for an end to corruption, greater democracy and social justice.

The protesters shook the cities of Morocco and achieved some of the things they wanted, bringing their country a new constitution and free elections.

Since that time, however, the numbers at the weekly demonstrations have plummeted to a few thousand in the larger cities as ordinary people abandoned the movement, apparently satisfied with King Mohammed VI's reforms, including granting more powers to elected officials ? or scared away by a tougher response to the protests.

Elections on Nov. 25 were won by a moderate Islamist opposition party promising many of the things once shouted at demonstrations.

Moroccan authorities have trumpeted their "third way" of dealing with the Arab Spring, steering between revolution and repression in favor of reforms with stability. Social unrest has continued though, including violent clashes between police and unemployed graduates calling for government sector jobs.

The youth-led movement has had a hard time harnessing that simmering anger.

"The problem with February 20 is that it is elitist and doesn't have a rapport with the people," said Mouad Belghouat, a 25-year-old rapper with February 20 whose songs excoriating the palace and social inequalities in the country became the soundtrack for the movement. The movement's demands weren't all realized, he said, "so we continue to go into the streets."

Belghouat, who goes by the named El-Haqed, or the Enraged, was jailed for four months for getting into a fight with a regime supporter in the gritty, low income suburb of Casablanca where he lives. His supporters say the charges were trumped up.

"You can't talk to people about parliamentary monarchy, they think the king is sacred, so you have to talk to them about unemployment and those stealing the wealth of the country," he said, explaining that he and his friends in the movement now go to neighborhoods and have discussions to raise people's consciousness.

It also helps that his rap songs appeal to the young, unemployed and disenfranchised youth that swell the crumbling slums surrounding Casablanca, Tangiers and other large cities.

The movement's protests always had an artistic side to them, with street theater often accompanying the colorful marches through the streets.

In one Casablanca protest, a man with the mask of a hated adviser of the king dangled a baguette on a fishing rod above the grasping hands of three ragged figures representing the people.

There is no denying that in the initial months of the protests, February 20 achieved more than generations of party politics had accomplished in opening up Morocco.

"It succeeded in breaking a taboo, it brought out into the open calls against corruption and the domination of certain figures on the economy," said Omar Bendoro, a political analyst at Rabat University. Close associates of the king from wealthy families are perceived to dominate the economy.

After years of repression, people are no longer afraid to make their discontent known, whether about lack of water, electricity or civil rights, he added.

"Social problems have always existed, but now the people explode because there is a chance that the powers-that-be will take them seriously," Bendoro said.

The king, due either to the street rallies or fears of Egyptian- or Tunisian-style revolutions, agreed in March to amend the constitution, bowing to longtime demands from political parties.

Under the new constitution the prime minister has more powers and comes from the party that won the most votes, rather than whomever the king felt like choosing under the old system. Ultimate power, however, still rests with the monarch and his court of close advisers.

Even as the concessions, including raising public sector wages, blunted popular anger, activists say there was a second, darker, prong to the official response ? one that targeted the movement itself.

Starting in May, demonstrations began to be attacked by riot police and hired thugs, and some activists started receiving late night visits from security officers.

"There were two levels at work, the institutional and the non-institutional, which was the intimidation, beatings and propaganda ? particularly propaganda about the Islamists," said activist Abadila Maaelaynine.

State media said the demonstrators were being infiltrated by radical communists and hardline Islamists from the banned Adl wal Ihsane (Justice and Charity) movement, which did have a big presence in the demonstrations.

The accusations stuck, further cooling public ardor for the movement, and soon the demonstrations became more of a weekly ? later monthly ? traffic nuisance than a real vehicle of political change.

"We failed to become more innovative in what we were doing and it's time to admit that," said Zeinab Belmkaddem, a young activist with the movement, which is now looking to start a political party and build up a lasting network tied to the people.

"We don't want to just stay in the streets, we tried that for a year ? been there done that ? that's it, but at the end of the day what happened is that others took advantage and that's what happened with the PJD," she said bitterly, referring to the Islamist party that won elections.

The party has been a clear beneficiary of the movement.

"The process of democratization in the country is moving in a good direction," said Mustapha Khalfi, once the editor of the PJD's newspaper and now the minister of communication and government spokesman. "Moroccan society has the feeling that what is happening in politics has an impact on daily life and most importantly when they participate it can make a difference."

Khalfi is quick to praise the February 20 movement for its early efforts, but noted that it has since lost momentum and popularity and it is the new government that is now looking to satisfy people's demands for jobs.

Activists, however, question whether the limited powers given to the new government will be enough to enact the deep reforms that the people crave ? especially as daily frustrations mount.

"Now the people are waiting to see what they can do," said the rapper Belghouat. "They will be disappointed."

D is for Death ? Cat's Journal

My interest in death is a relatively recent one. While I sometimes joke that I might have become a gothic if I was willing to devote more time to perfecting my appearance (clothing, make-up, hair), I could never identify with this subculture?s obsession with death. Sure, I enjoy a good vampire story every now and then (not that vampires are technically dead), and I?ve worn my share of skulls and crossbones, but that?s about it. Death just wasn?t anything that happened in my life.

And when death first did happen in my life, when my grandfather died as I was about 16, it still left me pretty cold. I hadn?t liked him in life, we never were close, so his death didn?t actually concern me much. I do remember silently (and rather cynically) telling him ?do it better the next time round? at the funeral. I think I had the impression he hadn?t been a very happy man as I knew him, and he also didn?t seem to have made my mother (and her brother?) very happy. He wasn?t directly abusive, as far as I know, just not emotionally available. Still, death remained detached from my life.

When my grandmother died, I was 28. Her death was a long and slow one, and it began when her dementia got more and more pronounced. She had been a very important person during my childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood, and I loved her very much. We mostly lived in the same city (except for three years when my family relocated due to my father?s job situation), but I had moved away for good at 21, so I only saw her a couple of times a year. Her world became smaller and smaller, until she stopped leaving her apartment altogether (except for rare accompanied visits to the doctor). Looking back, I wish I had known more about dementia back then so I had been able to better understand her world in those last few years. As it was, I just felt that she slowly disappeared into a loop of forgetfulness and only peeked out of that very rarely. I did what I could to make her look at me once again with that very particular twinkle in her eyes. In the very end, she had to move to a nursing home, where I visited her once. I remember pushing her outside in her wheelchair. She eventually said (as she had done several times before on different occasions) ?I think the dear Lord has forgotten me,? which I took to mean she wouldn?t mind if he summoned her into the Heaven (her imagery, not mine) sometime soon. So I told her something to the effect that she could go if she wanted to because I somehow believed she needed that permission (no idea why, really).

Anyhow, eventually she did die. I expected myself to cry and be very sad because she had been so important in my life, but I found that I didn?t feel much at first. She had been very old (90+ years), she had been on her way out for years and years, so this was hardly a shock. Especially since I had the feeling she had been ready to go for quite a while. I found the funeral pretty terrible. It was held in a chapel-like room of a funeral home, by a pastor who hadn?t known her and who had written his speech after interviewing one or two of her three sons. There was only a sentence or two about her attitude towards us grandchildren, which felt completely out of balance to me ? after all, she had been a grandmother for nearly half of her life, and a very active and present one at that! I was completely surprised to learn that she had loved to sing, and silently promised that I would accept the heritage of the singing (a promise which I still have to fulfill ? but I?m slowly inching my way towards that, starting from a position where I?d never sing in anyone?s presence). It was a Christian funeral, and that felt very alien to me. That said, I was surprised how moved I still was and that I actually started crying in the end. I didn?t think of myself as much of a spiritual person back then, but I clearly remember ?sending? a spiral to balance/counter the sign of the cross the pastor made at the end. It went right through the cross. Again, I have no idea where that impulse came from.

In the late summer of 2008, my father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He got chemotherapy, he got surgery, and for a while it all seemed hopeful. I still massively increased the frequency of my visits with my parents (whom I had seen maybe once or twice a year before) and ended up going there every other weekend or so. In that winter, he went back into the hospital, and I remember the whole family visiting him in there on Christmas. I sat by his bed, talking to him, and he gave my an article about ?modern? ways of organizing work he thought I?d be interested in. I made him an envelope full of collages that were meant to show him what memories of our shared life I cherished and that I loved him just the way he was. I told him I was proud to be his daughter and that I loved him. I also saw him cry, for the first and only time. That moment still has a very special place in my heart.

There was talk of him moving into a hospice, and my sister and I went to check out the one in my parents? hometown (a wonderful place that felt completely right to me). We also thought about? bringing him home again, but I don?t think that ever really was an option for my mother. I don?t remember any medical details, just that there was to be another surgery, and that I had a very bad feeling about it, fearing he wouldn?t survive the operation. I even opened a thread on a tarot forum I was a member of and asked people to pray and send good energy to him. The outpouring of love from total strangers was incredible, and I felt very blessed by it. Anyhow, for whatever reason, the surgery was postponed a few days, and I still believe that this was partly why he did survive it. So that?s how he started the year 2009: fresh out of surgery, but with the devastating result that his whole belly was full of metastases and that the surgeons hadn?t even tried to remove any of them. That was when death finally became a resident in my life.

A few days later, the whole hospital had to be evacuated so that four old war bombs in the area could be safely defused (or detonated). That didn?t add much to a peaceful recovery from that surgery for him. After the bomb action was over, he was transferred to the palliative care ward. I?m not entirely sure why he didn?t move into the hospice but I think it was considered too strenuous for him. (I?m surprised myself how little I remember of the medical facts and related issues, but since I got most of the information by phone, and my auditory memory is not the best, that might account for some of that. And then I think I was simply focused on other things, like the emotional situation of everyone.) About a week later, I went to a workshop to build a frame drum (I hadn?t even successfully journeyed back then, but for some reason I knew I needed to make a drum). The following Monday, I received a letter from my university, telling me that my Master?s thesis proposal had been accepted and that I now had four months to write its 80-100 pages. What timing.

The next day, I got a phone call from my sister that I should come to my parents? hometown because it looked as if my father would die soon. I threw a few things into a bag, called my workplace, my Beloved called his, and off we went (my Beloved driving us). I think we were about half an hour from the hospital, still on the autobahn, when my mother called and told me that my father had just died. I said I definitely wanted to see him and that they should wait for me there. We hung up, and a few minutes later, the clouds right in front of us opened up in a peculiar shape and I saw a beam of sunlight in beautiful colors. I was certain that this had been a sign from my Dad, saying goodbye to me.

We arrived at the hospital, were greeted by my sister who took us to his room (I hadn?t been there before). He was lying in his bed, his hands on his chest, one on top of the other, his chin supported by a plastic thingie to prevent his head from falling forward. He was oddly yellow. I went over and touched his hands, looking at his dead face, which looked like him and yet not really like him. We hung around in the room for a while, eating bland cookies and drinking tea or coffee. It was a very liminal time, with him being both there and gone. Eventually, we went home to my mother?s place, taking a big plastic bag full of his clothes (not sure why I remember this detail so well).

After that, there was a flurry of activity. A funeral home had to be called, a date for the service had to be set, an obituary and funeral service invitations had to be worded and designed, clothes had to be picked, etc. My parents had decided and prepared a lot of things beforehand, so it was a comparatively organized and smooth process. I felt strange about using the same funeral home that had handled things when my grandmother died, but I didn?t argue (the experience of having someone try and sell their ?prettifying dead people skills? to me/us was still pretty jarring to me). Since my father wasn?t a member of any church and didn?t believe in any god (as far as I know), we had to decide what to do about a speech. I offered to write something and read it myself. Then my sister also wanted to write and read something. And then we decided to ask a cousin of my father to add a third part of the speech and say something about their youth which we as his children of course hadn?t witnessed. My sister initially found she was overwhelmed with the task of writing a speech, despite wanting to do so, and wanted to use somebody else?s words instead. Eventually, I was able to coach her in writing in her own words and helped her edit the text to something that flowed nicely. It was very odd how easily my mother, my sister, and I were able to agree on the fundamental things, given how very different our personalities are and how often we disagree otherwise. It was a beautiful experience.

On the day of the service, I felt very official. I knew I had a role to fulfill, and a part of me felt that I had taken on parts in our family dynamic that had previously been my father?s (my mother did a similar thing in a different way when she started wearing his sweaters, his wedding band, and used the frame from his glasses when she had to get new ones for herself). I felt very much like my father?s daughter, more than ever before. I was incredibly grateful that we had had time to say the important things, that we had gotten some extra time by the postponing of the second surgery, and that he had been in my life. I smiled, I nodded to people, I checked in with the funeral home people who were in charge of starting the music and the end of the service, and I generally provided structure for everyone. My father?s cousin started the service, telling stories of their youth, stopping to cry a bit, and weaving a thread to the present. He ended by putting a tenderly wrapped potato onto the coffin, because that was something my father had mentioned to him when he asked him about something he missed. I was deeply touched by that gesture. My sister was next, and she did wonderfully, especially since public speaking isn?t something she?s used to. She also stopped to cry at some point. As the older sister, I went last. I stood behind the lectern, looked out at all these people who had known my Dad and cared enough about him to come to his funeral, even if I didn?t know at least a third of them, and started reading. I was glad I didn?t also cry, but somehow that was not the time for it. Instead, I beamed all over my face because I was so grateful and the service was so perfect. I ended with announcing the music my father had picked himself: What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong. After that, people lit candles or put down a rose on/near his coffin, and slowly we all went outside. I smiled some more, I shook hands, I talked to people, and we were told over and over again how beautiful and moving the service had been.

I was proud of us and how well we had done. I was surprised by how right I felt in the role of the speaker at this funeral. I was stunned how unusual our DIY service apparently had been, when it seemed the only way to do this properly to me (meaning, that a funeral speech should preferably be held by people who had known and loved the person who died, not by some random professional who had no real connection to anyone present). I was equally stunned to hear how creepy or, well, unusual many people found the idea of touching a dead person. And ever since then, I have had a strong feeling that I was supposed to do something ?around death.?

I paid more attention to things one could do in relation to death. I read stuff. I started to find dead animals that I had to take care of in one way or the other. And in late January 2011, I finally went to a volunteer fair to check out the local organizations that provide hospice work. It seemed that I was supposed to work with the dying and their close ones. I found one organization that enabled me to start visiting people (all of whom had serious dementia, which taught me a whole lot of Very Important Things in itself) in a nursing home they cooperated with. I ended up visiting three people once or twice who then died. In two of the cases I also met some of the family members and talked to them in the function of a hospice volunteer. This work has always left me very fulfilled, even though (or probably because) it had not been about me at all. My job was to give my time and attention to whatever I found on any given day. My job was to stay and be there and listen. And I found that I did surprisingly well, given that I?m often more of a talker and ?fixer? than a listener and someone who just accepts things/people. There are also some side effects that I didn?t plan on. I?ve become more conscious of the value of life. I?m even less willing to waste time with things I consider pointless. My priorities have shifted. I also eventually realized that I started hoping that everyone would have the chance of saying goodbye to life and loved ones instead of being ripped from life completely unexpectedly. I?m also not hoping for a sudden (read, unexpected) death for myself anymore.

The actual hospice training was meant to start in late fall last year, but I changed organizations immediately before that (I had found that while the original one was fair enough, the new one is a much better fit for me). So that?s what I?m doing right now: getting properly trained to volunteer with that new hospice service. The course will run until the end of March, but ? due to my experience ? I?m officially in their files as an available volunteer already, which means they could call me any day and ask me to start visiting someone again.

To this day, I am not quite sure why death suddenly became a topic I need to work with, but my gut feeling is very clear on that (there were umpteen other volunteer jobs at that fair alone that I also found interesting and worthwhile, but it was clear they weren?t meant for me). So, basically, I?m just trusting the Universe here to let me know where I need to go. Maybe a part of this has to do with death being such a taboo in most of the Western world. Maybe I can adapt my skills in creating ways for people to talk about taboo subjects that I acquired around the topic of sex. Maybe I will only find out later what this is all about. And that?s fine with me. For the time being, I just need to know that it?s the thing for me to do.

US sites hacked as objections grow to piracy deal

The hacking group known as Anonymous claimed a new series of hacks Friday, Feb. 17, 2012 against the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and consumer rights websites. Both sites were replaced with a violent German-language video satirizing ACTA. (AP Photo)

(AP) ? Opponents of a controversial global copyright treaty counted three victories Friday as American government websites were hacked and the Eastern European nations of Poland and Slovenia distanced themselves from the deal.

Sites belonging to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and the National Consumer Protection Week were vandalized by Anonymous, a loose collection of cyber rebels who have helped lead the charge against the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, or ACTA.

The hackers replaced the sites with profanity-laced statements and a violent German-language video satirizing the treaty.

At the same time, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Friday the country was abandoning plans to ratify the deal. He said he now sees his earlier support for ACTA as a mistake. "I was wrong," he said at a news conference.

His announcement came after Slovenia's government also said Friday that it is halting the ratification of ACTA.

"This agreement is obviously not a matter of understanding, but of major misunderstanding," Slovenian Education Minister Radovan Zerjav said.

The developments are bad news for industrialized countries such as the United States, which have pushed ACTA as a way of defending the entertainment industry and luxury goods manufacturers from pirates and counterfeiters. American officials spent years negotiating ACTA in an effort to harmonize intellectual property protection across different countries.

The goal is to help countries fight everything from fake pharmaceuticals to pirated music, but grass-roots activists ? many of them in Eastern Europe ? have been waging weeks of protests against what they see as moves intended to clamp down on free expression and Internet privacy.

So far around 20 countries have signed up to the deal, a key step before ratification. Four EU countries have now backed away from it ? Poland, Slovenia, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic ? and its approval at the European Union level appears increasingly uncertain.

Tusk also said Friday that he sent a letter to the European People's Party, a center-right group in the European Parliament to which his Civic Platform belongs, urging it not to back ACTA in its current form.

Back in the United States, the Trade Commission confirmed that the sites had been compromised, saying in an email that they had been taken down and wouldn't be brought back "until we're satisfied that any vulnerability has been addressed."

Anonymous boasted of stealing a large amount of personal data from Trade Commission employees ? including everything from banking statements to dating website information.

The Trade Commission said that while it was still investigating the hack, "the nature of the site limits information that could have been accessed."
