YouTube And Google+ Grow Closer: All Users Can Now Switch Their Usernames To Their Google+ Profiles

youtube-full-nameYouTube's comment section isn't exactly known for being a hotbed of in-depth intellectual conversations. One of the reasons for this, some would argue, is the fact that YouTube still lets people post comments using handles like 'cutepuppies99' without having to reveal your real identity. Starting today, however, you will have the option to use your Google-wide Google+-based identity that will show your real name (or at least the name you are using on Google+) to all YouTube users.

Pessimism clouds start to Syria talks

GENEVA (Reuters) - International talks on a way to resolve the increasingly bloody conflict in Syria opened in Geneva on Saturday with foreign powers in dispute over the fate of President Bashar al-Assad.

Kofi Annan, the former U.N. chief who is special international envoy on Syria, has been hoping for consensus on a plan for a unity government that, by excluding from the leadership figures deemed too divisive, would effectively mean Assad stepping down.

However, Moscow, a long-time ally of the Syrian strongman and an opponent in principle of what it sees as foreign meddling in domestic sovereignty, has voiced objections to any solution imposed on Syria from outside.

The United States and its European and Arab allies see no way ahead while power remains in the hands of Assad. The U.N. estimates at least 10,000 people have been killed as Assad's forces have tried to suppress the uprising against him.

"It has always been our view that a stable future for Syria, a stable political process means Assad leaving power as part of an agreement on transitional process," British Foreign Minister William Hague said in Geneva.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said nothing to reporters at the talks.

He and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Russia met in St.Petersburg, Russia, on Friday night but a U.S. official said differences with Moscow over the conflict remained.

"Our Western partners want themselves to decide the outcome of the political process in Syria although it is the job for the Syrians," Lavrov's Deputy Gennady Gatilov said in Russia prior to the Geneva meeting.

Clinton offered no further insights as she arrived for the talks. But Britain's Hague made clear he expected a day of hard bargaining.

"There is an opportunity for the international community to be much stronger and act more robustly but we can only do it with the agreement of Russia and China," he said.

The foreign ministers of the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council - Russia, the United States, China, France and Britain - were attending Saturday's talks.

Turkey, Kuwait, Qatar, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby are also taking part.

However, Iran, Syria's closest regional ally, and Saudi Arabia, a foe of both Damascus and Tehran and leading backer of the rebel forces opposing Assad, are not represented. Nor is anyone from the Syrian government or opposition.

WORSENING BLOODSHED

The Syrian conflict has gone from bad to worse since the uprising broke out 16 months ago, evolving from peaceful protests against the Assad family's four-decade dynastic rule to something akin to a civil war with a sectarian dimension.

Although the world has condemned the ferocity of Assad's forces' crackdown on the opposition - including bombardments of pro-opposition areas and mass arrests - it has been unable to halt violence which threatens to draw in more of the region's religious and political rivalries and alliances.

Annan, who brokered a much abused ceasefire in April, said on Friday he was "optimistic" that the Geneva talks would produce an acceptable outcome. Later, senior officials holding preparatory talks there failed to overcome differences. Western diplomats said Russia was pressing for changes to Annan's text.

"It is absolutely essential that the violence stops and that a political transition can begin. Kofi Annan made reasonable propositions and I hope that they will be upheld and that's the point of today's discussions," French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, said as he arrived for the talks.

An Arab diplomat told Reuters on Friday night after a preliminary meeting ended in Geneva that the state of the plan was looking bad.

"If there is no agreement, Bashar al-Assad will know he had every possible opportunity to fly his planes and burn towns and the international community will do nothing," he said.

Russia, and China, both conscious of the risk of internal revolt at home, have objected to what they see as Western interference in the domestic affairs of rulers like Libya's Muammar Gaddafi.

Western governments, however, have shown little will to repeat last year's Libyan experience of military support for Arab rebels in Syria, where Assad's forces are formidable and the complexities of religion and ethnicity much greater.

On the ground in Syria, fighting continued on Friday, with particular tension around the northern border with Turkey, a week after Syria shot down a Turkish warplane.

Syrian helicopter gunships bombarded a strategic town in the north and tanks moved close to the commercial hub of Aleppo, rebels said. But Syrian troops kept well clear of new Turkish air defenses installed to curb Syrian action near its borders.

Google I/O Day 2: Offline Editable Google Docs, Chrome for iOS, Super Computing Tool

Google I/O Day 2 Keynote

Yesterday at its I/O developer conference, Google ?unveiled a number of new products, including its first-ever Nexus branded tablet, but it kept a few announcements in reserve for day two. On Thursday morning, the company showed off a number of new tools and services, including iOS versions of its popular Chrome browser, offline editing capability for Google Docs and Google Compute Engine, a cloud-based super computer system for developers.

Google SVP Vic Gondotra took the stage at around 10:06 a.m., wearing a pair of light blue Project Glass goggles. He immediately thanked the crowd for a great first day and an even better first night party, where attendees enabled the new Google+ party mode and uploaded over 13,000 images of the event.?

Chrome and Cloud Applications

He then introduced Sundar Pichai, Google SVP of Chrome and Apps. Pichai started by recapping some of Google?s latest Chrome and Cloud releasees, including Chrome for Android and Google Drive. He showed a chart documenting the growth of the Internet, which now has 2 billion uses. He said that more users worldwide will be getting online via mobile and that?s the biggest growth area.

He then talked about Chrome browser, saying that the 3 year old application now has 310 million users, up from 160 million last year. He spoke about the speed of Chrome, saying that the ability to search from the Omnibox saves users worldwide 30 years of time every single day.

He then invited Chrome VP Brian Rakowski up on stage to talk about Chrome?s ability to work across different devices. ?I use about 8 different computers on a regular basis,? he said. Rakowski then showed how Chrome synced between his laptop, another computer, his phone and his tablet. After logging off one computer, he logged into a new computer and showed how it even opened the tabs he had open on the previous system. A phone he logged into not only had his surfing history but also allowed him to hit the back button and go back to the page he had visited before.

He also unveiled the new iPhone and iPad versions of Chrome, which launch today. On the iPad version he was even able to reorder tabs by dragging them.

Gmail and Google Drive

Pinchai then came back on stage and talked about businesses and institutions that have ?gone Google? by using Google apps, including 66 of the top 100 universities and 45 states. He then showed a video about ?going Google? with business people using Google features like Hangouts and docs.

He then invited Clay Bavor, Director of Product Management for Google apps up to talk about Google Drive. he first announced that Drive is, as of today, available on iOS and Chrome OS. ?

On the iPad, Bavor demoed Drive?s new optical character recognition ability by searching for text that only appeared in a scanned receipt he had in his drive. He was also able to find a photo of pyramids by just searching ?pyramids? on his box.?He then showed how easy it is to share Google documents with others using the iOS app.

Bavor then demoed Google Drive for Chrome OS, showing how it is the Chromebook?s file system.?

Bavor then announced that, as of today, Google docs allows editing of text documents offline. He then disconnected his Ethernet, made some changes to a doc and showed how the changes appeared in the document after he reconnected. Offline Google documents is available as of today, with spreadsheet and presentation support coming soon.

He talked about the Google Drive SDK, announcing version two of the kit today.

Pinchai came back on stage to talk about Chrome OS, reminding us that last year the company launched its first Chromebook at Google I/O.

He said that, with the latest update to Chrome OS, the platform is now three times faster, has an app-centric interface and is called the ?always updated? PC because it gets updates automatically. He then announced that Chromebooks will now be available at Best Buy.

Google Compute Engine

He then invited SVP of Infrastructure ?Urs Holzle on stage to talk about Google?s data centers, saying that the company had built one of the world?s largest collections of data centers and was looking for ways to share that computing capacity with users and developrs. He said that, in 2008, the company launched its App Engine service for developers to take advantage of Google?s infrastructure. He said that, in Japan, a company used App Engine to power the voting for a popular song contest with no slow downs.

?He then announced Google Compute Engine, a new virtualization service that gives you Linux virtual machines any company can deploy. He gave an example of a science group that needed to run a task that took 10 minutes on their own servers, but only took a few seconds when deployed across 10,000 cores, using Compute Engine virtual clusters.

He also said Compute Engine delivers a great value, up to 50 percent more computing power per dollar than competitors. Compute Engine is now open in limited preview, he said. He then talked about the number of cores Google has available for processing and showed a counter with 771,886 cores that have been available to the Genome project since the beginning of the presentation. He then ran the same biology computation on 600,000 cores and it appeared even faster.

Pinchai then came back on stage and showed a visualization of how the web platform has evolved, a graphical time that went from the beginnings of HTML to today. He said the web is getting richer at a faster and faster rate.?

Web App Development

He then spoke about APIs and how they lead to innovation from developers who take them and run with them right away. He then showed off a game called Bullet Storm that allows you to play a first person shooter right in the Chrome browser as an example of the kinds of innovation tha tare taking place.?Pinchai said that Chrome developers will be able to make their apps available offline and break out of the Chrome window and run full screen.?

?He then invited Joanne Fillion and Aubrey Anderson from Cirque De Soleil on stage to show how they are developing for the web. She said that the company wanted to create a rich experience that goes beyond text and images. Anderson then showed off Cirque?s web app, which using standard HTML 5 and CSS, enables you to navigate an avatar through a beautiful virtual world, filled with 3D images.

?Pinchai then showed a video about the history and ?journey of Chrome,? from its origins three years ago. He then announced that he?s giving the audience members a Samsung Chrome box to test out everything that?s new with the browser and its OS.

Project Glass Again

Google then showed Sergey Brin on stage and we watched as he had his sky divers re-enact yesterday?s ?Project Glass sky diving, biking and repelling routine. Though he provided some additional commentary, we didn?t learn anything knew about the device or its capabilities.

Huawei set to kick off TV advertising for the Ascend P!

Android Central

It looks like Huawei are going from strength to strength these days and it would appear that they are all set to start promoting the Ascend P1 Android smartphone on television.

The following video cropped up today on Huawei's YouTube channel and like many other smartphone commercials around at the moment it doesn't focus so much on the actual device but trys to portrait a message. The message here is quite clear:

The Ascend P1 is beauty meets brains -- proof that technology and good looks can go hand-in-hand.

I think Huawei are making a lot of sense here as the device certainly matches up to its image. With a dual-core 1.5GHz TI OMAP 4460 Cortext-A9 processor, measuring 7.69mm thin and 64.8 mm long, combined with a 4.3-inch super AMOLED 960 x 540 touch screen with Corning® Gorilla® Glass, an 8-megapixel BSI rear-facing camera and Dolby Mobile 3.0 + 5.1 surround sound technology the Ascend P1 is not a phone to be sniffed at.

You can check out the new TV commercial below and if you didn't see our full review of the device you can do so here.

How to set teens up for a healthy relationship with alcohol ? The ...

By Steve Allsop, Curtin University

Young Australians are exposed to a range of risks from alcohol, both from drinking themselves and other people?s use. According to the most recent National Drug Strategy Household Survey:

  • A third of 14- to 19-year-olds drank at levels that put them at risk of injury at least once during the previous month;
  • Around 28% of 14- to 19-year-olds reported being victims of alcohol-related verbal abuse (and 13% were victims of alcohol-related physical abuse) in the previous 12 months.

Parents may believe they no longer influence their teen?s behaviour and the choices they make about using alcohol. But the evidence tells us that what parents do, how they communicate their expectations to their children and whether they supply alcohol does influence their children?s choices.

Reducing the risk of harm

The first question parents usually ask when considering this issue is, ?what is a safe level of alcohol consumption for children??.

Some suggest it?s best to introduce children to small amounts of alcohol in the presence of parents so that by the time they turn 18, they have learnt some drinking skills. But there?s no evidence to support this contention, and indeed there is emerging evidence that early parental supply of alcohol is associated with increased risks.

The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) guidelines emphasise there is no evidence to guide decisions about low-risk drinking among young people. The NHMRC concludes that for those under the age of 15, not drinking is important. And for those aged 15 to 17, the safest option is to not drink and to delay starting drinking.

Evidence has emerged over the past couple of years about the impact of alcohol on developing brains ? most of this is based on animal studies but there are a handful of human studies as well. These studies identify physical changes in the brain and evidence of impaired problem solving and other cognitive functioning. This, in turn, might influence the ability of the child to reach their full educational capacity.

From a scientific point of view, the jury is still out about the extent of alcohol?s impact on growing brains. But as a parent, this risk of long-term harm has made me more conservative about my children?s access to alcohol.

After years of discussing alcohol and its effects with my children, I explained the evidence to them and indicated that for this reason, my advice was to avoid drinking for as long as possible. But I also pointed out that if they chose to ignore this advice, I wanted to know, and I preferred they only drank in my presence and only small amounts.

I made it clear to other parents that this was my expectation of my children and under no circumstances were they to provide them with alcohol.

?

How we use alcohol can be a powerful influence on our children. Sky noir

?

Your expectations matter

Australian children live in a world where alcohol is regularly promoted and consumed, so it?s useful for them to discuss alcohol from an early age and understand what their parents expect of them.

Parents can use media portrayal of alcohol use and related problems to start discussions that are general, rather than subjective and sensitive. The best time to start talking about risky alcohol use is before it happens, not at 2am when tempers are frayed.

Talk about how alcohol might affect them even if they don?t drink themselves. Rather than just telling them what concerns you, try to find out what they might be concerned about, such as how drinking may lead to behaviour they?ll later regret.

You could ask if they know of examples of this happening to others ? either on television or in movies, or in their day-to-day lives. This can help you reach an agreement on your rules about drinking and explain the rationale for those rules.

As children get older, parents might expect that peer influence usurps their own. But parents have a critical role: know where your children are and who they are with, and be clear about your expectations (keeping in touch, time to come home, what will happen if they break the rules) and what to do if they get into difficulty.

Discuss how other people?s drinking might affect them and help them develop responses, such as how to cope with pressure to drink, how to defuse aggression and how to avoid getting in a car with someone who is intoxicated.

Sometimes their friends may have difficulty with alcohol ? alcohol overdose is not uncommon ? so it?s worth talking about how they can ?look after their mates?, such as placing them in the recovery position and calling for help. Looking after your mates is a way of also learning how to look after yourself. And make sure your child also knows where to get further advice.

Your actions matter

If you decide to allow your child to drink some alcohol, be aware that the younger they commence risky drinking, the greater the downstream threats. Discuss how they can reduce risks by only drinking in the presence of responsible adults, never drinking more than one or two drinks or on an empty stomach, and never drinking and driving.

Think about your own behaviour: how we use alcohol can be a powerful influence on our children. And importantly, create a safe, loving and functional environment for your children. Teens who live in a secure family with good two-way communication have lower risk of alcohol-related harm.

OLC2009 | Tips to get from Bali to Lombok

June 27, 2012 By: JeffreyKFarle Category: Uncategorized

The Area of Bali sits over the western area of Lombok, separated by Lombok Strait within the two. Each share quite a lot in common because they are the best tourist destinations in the area with the yearly records of over one million global customers each. Geographically, the two island destinations are typically circular and even depend upon another for the travel and leisure and trade industrial sectors. Getting around right from Bali Gili Islands serves the locals and is a lift onto their economies. The method of travel market within the 2 island destinations is pretty varied, using air and even sea becoming the most common ways.
By Air
A flight of just Twenty five min?s will be all you need to get from Bali to Lombok and this also will be the simplest ways to move around both of the isles. Airlines choices feature Garuda Airline carriers, Merpati Airlines, Trans Nusa Air and Wings air with over two flights connecting Bali and Lombok, all under Twenty minutes. World-wide airline carriers incorporating Silk Air, Garuda as well as Merpati can provide regular trips towards Lombok International Airport, which has 100 % visa care on entrance utilizing fast but efficient management.
By Sea
The Padang Bai harbor in Bali is regarded as the main links between Bali mainland and Lombok mainland. This connects towards Lembar harbour in Lombok which happens to be about Four or five hours through Bali any time crossing by sea. Regular schedules for public ferry boats display a travel per 120 minutes right from Padang Bai harbour and also Lembar harbor. This absolutely should cost you Rp. 36,000 per person. The physical conditions for this ferries may bring up attention on the basis of safety, transportation worthiness and also amounts of wear and tear.
Fast boats have become the most typical industry in the sea transportation companies plus the number of fast boats also express boats operating amongst the two islands has seen a rise in the last few years due to increase in amount of travellers venturing. The Scoot Cruise, the Gili Cat, an Australian owned fast boat, the Blue Water Express working under Blue Water Safaris and the Island Getaway are some of the popular leaders in the fast boat companies. This specific form of transport is more pricy than ferry boats, though the finances are important considering the safety precautions received as well as comfort, privacy and elegance are spectacular.

Whichever mode you choose, safety comes first. Time is also of the essence and you can also look out for special offers including the Blue Water Express special offer available on their website at www.bluewater-express.com

Retro Game Network | The New Retro Gaming Community - Pure ...

Howdy everyone! Xanfan here with another edition of Pure Imagination! This time around, I?m going to be discussing another title that was released on the launch of the Atari 2600. Some of the games that were made available at the start of the systems lifespan have gone down in history as some of the best for the console, decades after they were originally released. Combat. Surround. Air-Sea Battle. Even Video Olympics and Indy 500 have their own special places in some of our hearts. But Basic Math? (Or even more basic, just ?Math? when Sears released it?) Seriously? Let?s take a looksie. But before we even begin to examine the box art for this title, let?s take a quick look at the listing in the catalog:

?Do your homework while you?re watching TV? Solve addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems on your own TV. The computer let?s you know if you?re right. If you?re wrong, the correct answer flashes on the screen. Basic Math. The fun way to learn.? Well what are we waiting for? LET?S GO! While you have to give Atari credit for wanting to make at least one educational game for the console, this was going to be a tough sell. (And with what has been said about the work environments at Atari over the course of it?s existence, perhaps Basic Math was a little too difficult even for them at times?) By looking at the image of a somewhat stiff and stuck-up looking Albert Einstein type professor, showing you how to add two and two together, the catalog simply makes it look incredibly boring. One thing that I am noticing is that there is no Atari console hooked up to the TV set, and the TV looks a lot like the kind that you would see in a hotel room back in the day, with it on a pedestal. You know, like the kind that had the cable line built in since there was nothing else to connect to the set like there is today? So we have here, a kid staying in a hotel doing elementary school classes via teleconference? LET?S GO!

Both Atari and Sears did whatever it was that they could do with such a simple, educational title, to make it look like it was going to be one of the best games on the system. Atari makes it look like a magical place with butterflies (and a catcher with a big 2 on his sleeve), dragons with tongues in the shape of a number 3, a creepy looking wizard with a division problem on her gown, and fishes swimming with 92 minus 50. What makes me laugh is that this title is supposed to be targeted at an early elementary student age, yet they are showing math problems like 21?36? I didn?t get into that kinda math until later on in life. (No, not high school!) If nothing else, this game should be a biology lesson! With frogs looking confused, birds flying, even 2 sharks getting ready to eat the little fishes, it?s definitely a story about the food chain! (And if you want to talk about math, I always heard there was a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Money is where my math skills are at their prime, no pun intended. Shouldn?t they have added a leprechaun with a credit card showing the numbers?) And it seems that the Atari Artwork Staff seemed to forget someone? The girl with the ponytail next to the frog? She has a star as a hair clip? A STAR? Why couldn?t it have been like a seven or something? Unless you want to go back to BASIC Programming (the real stuff), and say that the star indicates multiplication. What kid knows that in 1977?

Sears took a very unique approach with it. For some reason, I simply cannot look at the box art for this without beginning to sing the theme to the original version of the PBS show ?The Electric Company?. We have a ginormous hobby horse costume with 4 kids riding on it, a marching band to the side of it, with an incredible amount of mathematical equations and symbols all over the place. Now what exactly does a marching band, with tubas, drums and trumpets have to do with math? What, is this music class now? (I used to love music class!) Digressing, just like the Atari version, there is the arithmetic that makes me shudder for ?basic math? with things like 42X3? But at least Sears remembered that fractions are math too! And there is that damn star again, in between the addition and subtraction words on the top of the horse. Again, everyone just looks so happy to be doing math! I?m not quite sure about the horse though. It?s got this crazy look on it?s face and eyes, as if it?s saying to people, ?Get these kids off me! This isn?t what I had in mind!? Or perhaps he?s trying to say, ?It?s a setup. Combat is right next to me! I mean it! Please put me down!?

So you might be saying to yourself, ?Okay, I know it?s an educational game and that it might be pretty boring. I?ll level with you. But there has to be at least some kind of interesting or fascinating game aspect to the title, right?? ?Wrong.? All it is, is a basic math quiz. That?s all. No game elements whatsoever. Quizzes are not fun. What makes me laugh is that Atari was talking about doing your homework while watching TV. Does that mean that if I played this game for let?s say a full hour, that I would have been exempt from doing my actual homework? If that was the case, then maybe I would have been thrilled with it! But the last time I checked, math homework of that time of your life was questions like, ?If Mary has 4 apples and David has 8 oranges, how many pears does Jackie have?? Or, ?If a train leaves 30th Street Station at 4:13PM and another train leaves Grand Central Station at 4:51PM, and both are traveling 35MPH, how much baggage can you bring with you?? Yeah, remember those? Where they fun?

Even Atari realized that this title was a mistake. So what do they do? They changed the name of the title from ?Basic Math? to ?Fun With Numbers? in 1980. The decided to keep the artwork of the original game, but just changed the title, nothing added (no pun intended), nothing taken away. I guess they figured that people would just think to themselves, ?I wonder what this game is about? Is it a number logic game? I love those!? Then when they took it home, they saw it was just an arithmetic drill. (Or even worse, what if you had the original title from the day of the launch, threw out the box so you forgot what the cover looked like, still had the game, and then re-bought it? I know I for one would be pretty pissed about it!) And if that wasn?t enough, Atari released it AGAIN in 1986 when some of the classic titles were being re-released to compete with Nintendo, after they failed to put the 7800 console on the market fast enough. Seriously? Of the entire Atari 2600 library that was available to them with no rights issues, they publish the game a third time? And they thought that would be a large enough hit that it could compete with Nintendo and Sega? Unreal.

Educational games are a thing that for some reason, just never take off. The only two games that were considered educational that really have a following are Number Munchers for the Apple II and The Oregon Trail. (The latter even just got released in a fresh format for the Nintendo Wii, DS and iOS.) But for the most part, they fail. It could be because video games are supposed to be an alternate reality, to get you away from the true reality of having to do things like homework. Yet, nearly every video game console has had educational games for it. Even the NES had Donkey Kong Junior Math, but at least that had SOME kind of entertainment value with moving Donkey Kong Junior all over the place. Personally, and this is no lie: I would have more fun (even now), learning about math from Sesame Street. Sesame Street was cool back in the day! With numbers, we obviously had Count Von Count! AH AH AH! And don?t forget about the big pinball game with the shiny ball hitting the bumpers with the big number at the end, and the funky music to go with it! And how can we forget that poor baker that announced how many pies he had in his hands, that always managed to slip on the steps and get covered in pie? Now THAT is a way to learn about numbers, not with this title!

(AP) ? North Korea dispatched soldiers to pour buckets of water on parched fields and South Korean officials scrambled to save a rare mollusk threatened by the heat as the worst dry spell in a century gripped the Korean peninsula.

Parts of North Korea are experiencing the most severe drought since record keeping began nearly 105 years ago, meteorological officials in Pyongyang and Seoul said Tuesday.

The protracted drought is heightening worries about North Korea's ability to feed its people. Two-thirds of North Korea's 24 million people faced chronic food shortages, the United Nations said earlier this month while asking donors for $198 million in humanitarian aid for the country.

Even in South Phyongan and North and South Hwanghae provinces, which are traditionally North Korea's "breadbasket," thousands of hectares (acres) of crops are withering away despite good irrigation systems, local officials said.

Reservoirs are drying up, creating irrigation problems for farmers, said Ri Sun Pom, chairman of the Rural Economy Committee of Hwangju County.

A group of female soldiers with yellow towels tied around their heads fanned out across a farm in Kohyon-ri, Hwangju county, North Hwanghae province, with buckets to help water the fields. An ox pulled a cart loaded with a barrel of water while fire engines and oil tankers were mobilized to help transport water.

The North Korean villages of Kohyon-ri and Ryongchon-ri were among several areas that journalists from The Associated Press visited in recent days.

Pak Tok Gwan, management board chairman of the Ryongchon Cooperative Farm in North Korea, said late last week that the farm could lose half its corn without early rain.

Mountainous North Korea, where less than 20 percent of the land is arable, has relied on outside food aid to help make up for a chronic shortage since a series of natural disasters and outmoded agricultural practices led to a famine in the 1990s. North Korean farmers still face a shortage of fuel, tractors, quality seeds and fertilizer, the U.N. said in a report earlier this month. Many irrigation systems rely on electrically powered pumping stations in a country with unstable power supplies, the report noted.

On Tuesday, North Korean state media reported record-high temperatures in Pyongyang and other cities in the southwest.

South Korean officials also reported the worst drought in more than a century in some areas after nearly two months without significant rainfall, raising worries about damage to crops and a dangerous drop in water levels in the nation's reservoirs.

"The worst drought in 104 years is causing damage to our agricultural and livestock industries, resulting in price hikes in some farm products," Finance Minister Bahk Jae-wan told a crisis management meeting Tuesday.

Nearly 28,000 South Koreans, including soldiers and local residents, have been mobilized to help water rice paddies and farm fields and more than 13,000 water pumps have been provided to drought-stricken areas, the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said.

South Korean Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik picked up a hose to water a field during a visit Tuesday to Hwaseong, south of Seoul. Beneath a blazing sun, dead fish could be seen on the nearly dried-out bed of a reservoir in Bongdam village in Hwaseong.

Rain is forecast for South Korea this weekend, the Korea Meteorological Administration said in Seoul. The agency could not confirm the dry spell reported in the North, but dispatches sent by North Korea to an international weather center indicated little rain over the past several weeks there as well, spokesman Jang Hyun-sik said.

The drought also has led to deaths of a highly endangered species in a reservoir in the southern city of Nonsan in South Korea. Hundreds of cockscomb pearl mussels have perished since June 14 when the reservoir's water levels drastically dropped, local official Lee Soo-jung said. Officials have been trying to move the cockscomb pearl mussels to water, she said.

Officials blamed high atmospheric pressure over the Korean peninsula for the drought.

Wisdom from a Divorced Gal for You Marrying Types.

Or, as my friend,Christa, put it:?

Or sometimes you want to so badly because you know it's the only thing that will bring you any relief - just get it over with.

(Apologies from The Offbeat Drummer in advance about the highlighting and font clusterfuck. I can't figure out how to fix the html codes.)

Legitimate statistic? If you're planning on marrying, your literal chance of remaining married til death do you part is 50/50 in contemporary society. In America, anyway, marital longevity is the exception rather than the rule these days. In other words, we'll see a lot fewer 50th anniversary celebrations than in previous decades, like when most of our grandparents were alive.

You might remember several blogs back, when I analyzed Sternberg's Triangular Theory of love. (For a refresher course with impossible-to-see graphics that I've corrected below, see?http://www.theoffbeatdrummer.blogspot.com/2012/05/i-hate-to-use-journey-song-title-but.html.)?It looked something like this:?

Back in that blog, I noted that I knew too many married couples who had either settled into companionate love or worse yet, who had entered into the zone of empty love, where there was commitment, but the intimacy and passion were, by most accounts, gone. (Statistically, companionate love is the most commonly reported in society in long-term relationships.) I used the illustration of the ONLY famous case of consummate love that I could muster from the last century off the top of my head, that of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, who went through hell-and-gone to make things work, and did so successfully, until Lennon's murder in 1980.

It's not that I'm pro-divorce or anti-marriage. Either situation is a major life decision/change, and I've gained experience from both. Marriage can be wonderful and fulfilling, and divorce can be liberating and inherently really healthy, often in hindsight, and while painful in the moment, it's a decision most don't regret. ?I know a lot of relieved, happy divorced people who are either single (like me), separated and just waiting for the much-anticipated Day, (like Christa), or in happy post-divorce relationships that don't regret their decisions to have left their spouses (like my own ex-husband). I also know divorced people who, if they had to do it all over again, would never have left in the first place. From the still-married front, I know a few couples who seem on the perpetual brink of "Can we do a trial separation?" or "I think we need some space." Still others report being "happily" married, though that group, out of my entire social circle, is the smallest by far.

Hey, if you're shitpickles/gobbldygook about one another 20-30 years into your gig, then live your lives and God bless you. You're unusual, but lucky. If you're falling asleep on the couch and figure it's best to stay there until morning, yeah, well. If you're reduced to roommates who have a joint checking account but who mumble under your breath, "Oh, Christ, if he leaves his boxers crumpled up in the corner of the bathroom ONE MORE TIME!," or secretly grumble about another Sunday dinner with the in-laws, or you've turned into, basically, just friends, ?it's time to reconsider the state of your affairs at home.

What happens when you've been married for a decent span of time, you've bred children with your spouse, and then you find attracted to someone else and/or you just can't take the complacency or disinterest anymore? ?You do one of several things: 1) You own up to your feelings and have a frank discussion with your spouse, and you seek counseling to figure things out. (Which doesn't usually work, as I found out in my case and in the cases of a few divorced friends and family members of mine.) 2) You decide to stay for the sake of the kids. (Another REALLY bad idea, which breeds resentment and escalates existing frustrations. Toughing it out doesn't make you a martyr. It makes you both douchebags.) 3) You engage in an affair. (Which, while a sin and disavows the sacred commitment to your spouse that you took in front of GOD, nobody ever DIED AND WENT TO HELL as a result. You might even be new-agey enough to either tell your spouse about it (as I know in one case of a friend of mine) or don't make a concerted effort to hide your other relationship and get a subscription to Polyamory Today. 4) You follow your bliss, decide to figure your life out on your own, and split (WHICH, ACCORDING TO SOME RELIGIOUS DOCTRINES, IS ALSO A HUGE SIN, but again, it's doubtful anyone was poked into the bowels of Hades purely because the scarlet letter of "D" was embroidered onto their burning, disintegrating garments. (Bottom line in any event? Don't worry about the correlation between HELL and DIVORCE, despite what my own religion advises in a few paragraphs.)

If you're considering separation/divorce and you have no kids, you're pragmatically golden. Aside from asset-dividing, real estate headaches, reassigning your life insurance beneficiaries, separating your DVD collection, figuring out who gets the toaster oven (usually the guy, unless they're whizzes in the kitchen and are aces at whipping up food other than Stouffer's French Bread Pizzas, and finding an apartment, it's not all that different than the breakup of any other romantic relationship, regardless of duration. (It's safe to say that my breakup with Chris was like a zillion times more grueling, painful, difficult and lingering than the dissolving of my marriage to Craig, and I'd been with Chris for 3 1/2 years and Craig, including dating, at total of 15 years.)

When offspring are involved, it's markedly more grievously horrible to begin the separation/divorce process, particularly when you have to have "that talk" with your children. It's better if the other spouse actually tells the kids with you, but in my case, if was all up to me. ?It's easier when kids are either too young to really notice or remember that you were ever married in the first place or they're all grown up and busy leading their own lives, so they're like "Yeah, whatever, this is sad and weird but it beats you guys either fighting or ignoring one another all the time..." The worst is when they're of just enough emotional maturity to understand that the family is breaking apart and that life as they've always known it is ending, which is tantamount to a death in the family in many ways, but children take comfort in the fact that Mom and Dad BOTH still love them TONS and the adjustment to having two homes, albeit a lengthy and emotionally taxing recovery, does resolve itself eventually (as was the case with Luke). A tough key is convincing the kids that the divorce is in no way their fault, though there will be tantrums and days when the children wish to God they'd never been born in the first place, with the amount of utter crap your inability to stay married has piled upon them. Kids of a reasonable age and intellect will bitch about schlepping their belongings from house to house as per the custody agreement (if they're under 18), or if they're adults, feel pangs of guilt if it appears they're favoring one parent over the other, many of whom side with Mom regardless, unless Dad's been, categorically, the factor of stability to which they've become accustomed.

A lot of offspring see going to either Mom's or Dad's house as a staycation trip into Happy Ville. Pitted against one another, on occasion, one parent will make his/her house No Holds Barred Fun Zone, while the other parent's house is like being in prison. And kids are crafty. They like to do the pitting-against.

Something occurred to me yesterday: My wedding ceremony took longer than my divorce hearing in court, and in both cases, Craig and I shared a meal afterwards. A strange statistic, but I found it kind of ironic.

Recently, my mom and I were talking about my wedding gown being in the attic and what on Earth we're supposed to do with it. It's from 1996, en vogue back then, but not necessarily now, and it was a size 16, whereas now I'm a size 4. My mom had a dry cleaner "preserve" and box it up, you know, just in case. In case of what? I didn't breed a daughter. I don't plan on passing it down to Luke's eventual bride, and it's of no intrinsic value, other than sentimental. I divorced the guy--thus the gown is a largely-forgotten keepsake from 16 years ago.

Craig got custody of the wedding photo album ?(whereas, I got Luke's baby book and photo albums), and the only picture I have of me in my aforementioned gown, as you've seen before, is with my mom. It really was a gorgeous gown, not bad for waiting until 2 months before the big day to find a dress and buying it off the rack, which I spent $900 on, which either means it's appreciated, like my wedding rings, which I *don't* have custody of, or depreciated severely, like my car:

(Another thing I found when I moved back home? Craig's tuxedo bow tie/cumberbun set from our wedding, that I kept. THAT I'm holding onto. It was a John Lennon artwork, silk, limited-edition design of his naked John/Yoko embracing in color over black. I've looked on eBay many times, and on other web sites, and have never found another one like it. Even Google image searching for it comes up blank. But hey, if some rabid Lennon fan wants to give me like $500 for it, I might reconsider. Hey, times are tough.)

Pastor Dave is knee deep in wedding season, which keeps him mighty busy. Last night at church, during our prayers, we prayed for a couple he married yesterday and their burgeoning life together, after which Dave said a prayer for "all married couples" which, when he does that, drives me insane. We never pray for the single people in church--for God to send us a partner with whom to share our lives, which I think is unfair. Singles, by and large in our church, are ignored. There is no ministry for singles, the widowed or the divorced, while there are events (like dances) and symposiums for married and otherwise paired-up people. ?It's unfair that married people are looked upon as being more worthy of prayers and intercessions on their behalf than single or divorced folks are.?

In reading the by-laws of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, it explicitly says the same thing the Scriptures say, which is that divorce is a no-no and anyone who remarries is committing adultery, and that committing adultery while you're with your first spouse casts you out with the lepers, in essence. That's bullshit, I say. While not as extreme as the Catholic church, in which you can't remarry in God's house because you're a general ex-communicated scumbag, you can re-marry in a Lutheran church. Still, it's evidently a sin to get divorced according to the Lutherans too. ?My church's official position is essentially this:

"Again, no exceptions are noted. The principle that to divorce one's spouse and?remarry is to commit adultery is presented by the Lord. In the second half of the?verse, we hear again (cf. Matt. 5:32) that for one to marry a divorced woman is to?commit adultery. We repeat here the grammatical point that the participle, without?the definite article, cannot be pressed to refer with absolute certainty to every?divorced woman. [66] Nor does the passage address in express words the case?of the remarriage of the spouse put away unjustly at another's initiative. These?qualifiers, however, in no way diminish the uncompromising character of the?Lord's requirement: divorce and remarriage are not in accordance with God's will?that marriage remain unbroken."
?Oh, there are by-laws concerning marrying someone who isn't a Christian in the first place, which breaks more of the church's laws. Evidently, God would strongly prefer you stay in a loveless, lifeless marriage with your fellow Christian than to get a divorce and actually have the capacity of building a strong, healthy relationship with someone else.?

Pfft.

If and when I do remarry, which seems iffy at best at this point, I doubt highly it'd be a service held in my church again; rather, it'd be in a neutral location (like Gibraltar!) with either Pastor Dave (I'd pay to fly him in) or a judge handling the service.

All this wedding/marriage nonsense is grating on my nerves as of late. Facebook friends celebrating anniversaries will post gooey love statuses honoring their spouses, their wedding pictures from like 15 years ago, or younger people, pictures of their engagement rings, and generally rub in the face their supposed happiness to anyone who might be single, widowed or divorced. Conversely, there are plenty of pages within social media dedicated to the upside of divorce and rubbing in the freedoms and lack-of-hassle therein. I?engage?in those pages when I'm feeling particularly crappy about being divorced (which mainstream society pushes upon us as a sub-group).?

It's widely judged that if you're the victim of one of two groups: You were dumped or you dumped your spouse. I admittedly dumped my husband and that was a lot as a result of my chronic substance abuse and mental illness, though I wasn't happy for a long time before that, which is probably why I started drinking in the first place, when my son was in preschool.?

We should all thank our lucky stars that in most states, anyway, there's now the "no-fault" divorce. See, both of my Miklasz grandparents were married and divorced before they married one another, in the 1920's. Back then, you had to have a reason. My grandfather's wife divorced him on grounds of drunkenness (in my family? What a surprise!) and my grandmother was sued for divorce by her first husband on grounds of desertion (she just split). There was no such things as "irreconcilable differences." And the stigma of divorce was so prevalent that it wasn't until my dad and uncle were adults that they even found out that their parents had been in first marriages, and that they had a half-sister somewhere, who was mentioned in my grandfather's will as being eligible to receive....NOTHING. (Which was really shitty...)

Divorce is certainly a very painful process for some, but for me it was liberatingly bittersweet and the resentment between my ex and I is very even-keeled at this point. He found himself a gal who'll tolerate his negative qualities even better than I did, and they seem really happy, which makes me really happy and is healthy for my son. I'm on an elective dating sabbatical, and have no plans to remarry in the next 5 years, which also makes my son happy.

I hope some of this clarifies the upside and downside of separation and divorce. It ain't easy, kids, but you'll be just fine. Someday, you too could be referred to as "(Insert Ex-Husband's first name here)' FIRST wife." And someday, it might not bother you anymore.

Facebook pulls new 'Find Friends Nearby' feature

5 hrs.

Over the weekend, Facebook added a?stalkerish feature called "Find Friends Nearby" to its mobile website; on Monday, it was gone.

"Find Friends Nearby" let users of iOS and Android devices locate BFFs ??and perhaps nBFFs (never BFFs) ? ?who were within geographic?range. A great feature for someone you like; for someone you don't, not so much.

The add-on was part of Facebook's efforts to bolster its mobile offerings, including bringing?in more revenue, something the social network is?trying to figure out how to?achieve.

But on Monday, the feature could not be accessed.

Msnbc.com contacted Facebook about the "Find Friends Nearby" pullback.

?A spokesperson for the social network said the program was not a "formal release."

"This was something that a few engineers were testing. With all tests, some get released as full products, others don't. Nothing more to say on this for now ? we'll communicate to everyone when there is something to say."

Facebook engineer Ryan Patterson told Tech Crunch over the weekend that he built "Find Friends Nearby" ? originally called "Friendshake" ??with another engineer as part of a?hackathon.

Patterson said he saw the "ideal use case" for the product as "one where when you?re out with a group of people whom you?ve recently met and want to stay in contact with," a kind of "really easy way to exchange contact information with multiple people with minimal friction."
