94% Marley

Director Kevin MacDonald and co-producer Ziggy Marley bring forth the most definitive look back at the life of Bob Marley, in the new documentary "Marley". From the formation of "The Wailers" and the comings and goings of different members of the band (including Peter Tosh and Jimmy Cliff), to Marley's dealings in Rastafarian and how it bled into his Reggae music; and also from his controversial lifestyle punctuated by being a "womanizer" (eleven children from seven different women) to his humanitarian nature, this in-depth (two and a half hour) documentary will immensely satisfy fan and novice alike. I, like many other younger American non-Rasta's, had grown up knowing Bob Marley for his more commercially catchy hits and from his countless depictions on a multitude of shirts worn by numerous Bay Area potheads. But, being a novice, going into this film I wasn't particularly interested in seeing a two and a half hour movie about the life and times Bob Marley. A story I thought I knew, and had heard, countless times before. But that notion changed rather abruptly within the first few minutes of this movie. And by the end, due to the brilliant investigative journalistic nature of MacDonald which elevates "Marley" from an average movie to a MUST SEE documentary, audiences who see this film will walk out with an in-depth appreciation for the man who wrote some of the most poetic and revolutionary lyrics in music history. "Marley" is the no holds barred dissection of a particular subject (or subject matter) which fans of great documentaries will crave (and in fact, was nowhere to be found in the films of 2011). And for a documentary that was originally supposed to be directed by Martin Scorsese, after seeing what MacDonald has accomplished here, it would be hard to imagine "Marley" being more perfectly executed in anybody else's hands. What truly sets "Marley" apart from other bio-documentaries and A&E specials is how, in a very PBS way, MacDonald uses a seemingly endless amount of archival footage, as well as interviews with almost everybody (still alive) who had anything to do with Marley's upbringing and his life as a world famous musician, as the narration. It was quite apparent that MacDonald had full access to any and all information he wanted, and as far as I could see, he thankfully took complete advantage of this fact. As audiences, we hear from Marley's family and peers about how as a young boy he was an outcast because of his mixed-race. We also hear from notable Jamaican artists and record executives, who saw his maturation into a musician that worked to bridge the gaps, not only in Jamaica (during times of war) but nationwide as well. In this way, MacDonald enables audiences to intimately know Bob Marley on every level (get your mind out of the gutter). But all the pure information aside, what MacDonald does very well here is not creating a documentary which totally sanctifies Bob Marley, much as many movies (tributes) do when celebrities with checkered pasts die. MacDonald captures recollections of Marley from both those who loved the man and those who thought him to be nothing more than a womanizing zealot, who was sadly not as politically motivated as he should have been. Final Thought: Overall "Marley" is a brilliant example of an archetype onto how all biographical documentaries should be made. Grade "A" filmmaking, in conjunction with a larger than life subject (subject matter) is what elevates "Marley" into one of the most entertaining two and a half hour documentaries I have ever seen. If you are at all a Bob Marley fan (casual or otherwise) and if you are able to, see "Marley", any way you can, before Hollywood makes a more commercialized (legacy ruining) feature film version of his life in a few years; starring Mekhi Phifer no doubt. Is Texas dad who killed man to protect his 5-year-old daughter a criminal?

A Texas grand jury must decide whether to charge a father who killed a man after finding the man molesting his 5-year-old daughter. Does deadly force extend to a father protecting his daughter?

In Shiner, Texas, there?s little doubt among residents that a 23-year-old man who reportedly killed a man he found molesting his 5-year-old daughter in a horse barn should be hailed as a hero, not denounced as a criminal.

Yet some legal experts question why the father hasn?t yet been arrested and charged with murder, saying vigilante justice, no matter how the circumstances come about, can?t be tolerated in a civil society.

A Texas grand jury will have to deal with those questions next week as it takes a deeper look at the circumstances of the killing, and whether the father was justified in hitting the man so hard with his fists that he died.

In most jurisdictions, according to ?Criminal Law,? a widely used textbook, the use of fists in defense if there are no other weapons present is automatically an example of reasonable force. But in this case, were emotions an extenuating circumstance that caused the angry dad to go too far? More broadly, when is a person in a defensive fight required to stop?

?Assuming it?s true that this guy was molesting the daughter ? he would then have the right to defend her and hit him enough to have him stop,? James Harrington, director of the Texas Civil Rights Project, told Foxnews.com. ?But you cannot summarily execute him, even though I can understand the anger he would have.?

He added: ?The question is: When does it move beyond self-defense??

And there?s another quirk to the case, suggests radio talk show host Geraldo Rivera, a lawyer.

?If he had a weapon and he used it to stop a sexual assault, he would not be indicted, but, ironically, the fact that he didn?t have a weapon leaves him more legally vulnerable than otherwise he would be,? Mr. Rivera told Bill O?Reilly Friday on Fox News. ?In this case, you grab him off, now you?ve stopped the sexual assault, but now what are you doing? At what point does prevention of the sex assault become revenge, the implementation of vigilante justice??

So far, the court of public opinion has stood steadfastly behind the father.?

?Any father would have done that," Michael James Veit, a neighbor, told CNN on Thursday. "Everybody is saying the father is justified."

The killing happened last Saturday, according to Lacava County Sheriff Micah Harmon, after the man?s daughter had gone to a barn to feed the family?s chickens, and then began screaming.

When the father ran to investigate, he found a man described as a family acquaintance, a horse groomer, sexually abusing the girl. Police have not released any names, in part to protect the girl?s identity, and, in the case of the man who was killed, because they have not yet located his relatives in Mexico.

According to the county coroner, the man died of blunt force trauma to the head and neck. Eyewitnesses arrived to see the alleged molester already on the ground, not moving. The girl was taken to a hospital, where she was treated and released for minor injuries.

While police continue to investigate, they have so far found no reason to disbelieve the man?s story. The dad ?had remorse,? says Sheriff Harmon. ?It wasn?t his intent [to kill anybody]. He was protecting his daughter and doing what he thought he had to do to protect his daughter.?

Despite the dad?s potential legal liability, Rivera said, most American jurors ? given the facts as known at the moment ? would agree with Harmon.

It?s Fathers Day today in Japan at least, so to celebrate let?s look at a survey from goo Ranking into Fathers Day failures.

Demographics

Over the 19th and 20th of April 2012 1,092 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 60.5% of the sample were female, 11.3% in their teens, 17.0% in their twenties, 28.4% in their thirties, 25.5% in their forties, 10.2% in their fifties, and 7.7% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

My parents don?t believe in either day ? I?ve only ever once sent my mother flowers that I won in a prize draw at a supermarket. However, my parents-in-law do, and for reasons I?ll not really go into, we have to buy both a present on each of the days?

Anyway, beer seems the simplest choice?

Lost and Tired ? My love/hate relationship with Lego's

My relationship with Lego?s is complicated to say the least. I love the fact that my boys are so creative with them but at the same time,? I hate finding them with the bottom of my foot.

No matter how many times I try to get them all picked up,? they always seem to reappear shortly after.

Lego?s have brought my kids together and also been the root cause of much of the fighting in the Lost and Tired household.? They always fight over individual pieces and it drives me crazy. Part of me wants to just take a break from Lego?s all together and see if their relationships improve.

Some of the boys tend to hoard the Lego?s?.cough cough Gavin cough cough.
I don?t think that he?s trying to be selfish.? I think he just really,? really likes his creations and does want to see them dismantled. I can totally understand that.? However,? at the same time, we don?t have an endless supply of Lego?s and it?s not fair to the other boys who want to build as well.

This always leads to a meltdown and makes me hate Lego?s even more. The only reason we even still have them is because of how much the boys love them. If I didn?t love my boys so much,? I would have killed off the Lego population long ago.

My goal is to try to find a nice balance where the kids can play with their Lego?s without fighting and I don?t have to step on them in the middle of the night anymore.

You probably won't know the name, but you most certainly use its technology on a daily basis. InterDigital is a pioneering company that helped develop WCDMA, 3G and HSDPA during its 50-year history. It counts former Apple CEO Gil Amelio as one of its directors, but the only time you'll ever hear its name is when it's embroiled in litigation.

Either because it's suing, or being sued for licensing fees in the complex, murky world of wireless technologies, it's easy to get the idea that InterDigital is a patent troll. A name that, both Nokia and most recently, Huawei have barely stopped short of throwing at the company.

But what's it like being painted as the villain in the wireless business pantomime? Company president and CEO William "Bill" Merritt took the time to answer some of our questions, talk about what the company actually does, what's in the future and why they definitely aren't a patent troll.
