Don't Worry About the Volt's Reported Battery Woes

Of the 15,054 Chevy Volts sold as of this printing, exactly zero have caught fire out in the real world. I don't want to sound like a cheerleader for the Volt program, but it pushed a lot of boundaries in engineering and testing and in some ways exceeded the standard testing parameters the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) uses. All the hubbub centers around one particularly strenuous crash test?the side pole test?done in May 2011. In this series of tests, a car is run sideways into an immovable steel post at 20 mph, then it's rolled 90 degrees onto its side and all the fluids are allowed to leak for 5 minutes. The car is then rolled onto its roof for 5 minutes and then onto its other side. The test looks for side intrusion into the cabin and damage or danger caused by the loss of car fluids. NHTSA's Volt passed these tests and was parked in an outside storage area. A strange thing happened: After three weeks, the battery caught fire, consuming the already wrecked vehicle and a few cars nearby.

I spoke with Doug Parks, GM's global vehicle chief engineer for the Volt, who started off by saying, "I believe the Volt has always been safe, but this was an event we needed to investigate thoroughly." After some sleuthing, they found the source of the fire was a short circuit caused by something called dendritic growth. The phenomenon occurs when energized silicon chips get wet and their metals are leached through the substrate, growing into what looks like tree roots that eventually lead to a short circuit. The battery in the Volt is shaped like a capital T, with the top of the T under the rear seats and the remainder running up the center tunnel between the front seats. During the test the undercarriage crash structure successfully absorbed crash energy but also punctured the battery case and cooling system. When the car was rotated, coolant worked its way onto the top of the battery, where a major control module lives, and got its silicon chips wet. Because the testing standards at the time did not require the battery to be discharged after the crash (analogous to draining the gas tank, which is standard practice), dendritic growth occurred and the chip short-circuited, connecting the poles of the battery and leading to a battery fire.

After repeated testing to replicate the scenario, GM found the probability of this happening in a real-life crash to be nearly zero but took preventive action anyway. The area of the battery tunnel around the crash beam was reinforced, and a coolant-leak sensor was added as well. All new Volts built since February come with these upgrades, and older cars can be taken in to dealers for what GM calls enhancements, since this isn't considered an official recall. Parks also noted, "The major automakers including GM are now working with the Society of Automotive Engineers to standardize discharge methods following an impact event." I've paid close attention to this story, and after reviewing the testing, failure mode, and response, I'm comfortable with the performance of the Volt in crash testing. As a final thought, consider this: Traditional cars tote around 15 gallons of highly flammable (and carcinogenic) gasoline in an easily pierced tank under the car, yet you don't even think about it.

Game graphics to be ?indistinguishable from reality? | Lazygamer ...

SW1313

There?s a new M-rated Star Wars game coming. Unveiled at this year?s E3, Star Wars 1313 brings the series back to core gamers ? with recent Star Wars titles giving that demographic a skip. It?s looking pretty incredible ? with many wondering if its destined for next-gen systems. Much of that visual fidelity comes from CG wizards? Industrial Light and Magic, Lucasfilm?s film effects studio. On the evolution of game graphics, ILM has predicted that in 10 years, games will be ?indistinguishable from reality.?

Star Wars 1313, features a cinematic aesthetic, punctuated with fluid motion capture and strong vocal work ? but it?s a far cry from being anywhere near photorealstic. Industrial Light & Magic?s Kim Libreri thinks it won?t be too long until that happens.

??The way its going,? he said in a video interview with CVG, ?it?s gonna be pretty hard to tell the difference between something that is interactive and rendered in real-time, and something that was done for an animated TV show, or even a live action thing.?

Graphics technology has evolved at such a rapid rate, that he believes that a decade from now, it?ll have sufficiently advanced to provide photorealism.

?we?re matching the quality of an animated movie seven or eight years ago, and another ten years from now, it?s just going to be indistinguishable from reality.?

Photorealism in games seems to be a popular topic right now. Last week, 2K games boss Christopher Hartmann said that he believes gaming as a medium won?t change much until photorealism in games is possible.

?To dramatically change the industry to where we can insert a whole range of emotions, I feel it will only happen when we reach the point that games are photorealistic; then we will have reached an endpoint and that might be the final console,? he said.

Public perception and vandalism among ... - Alabama Business News

MOBILE, Alabama ? As nearly 700 farmers from around the state descended on Mobile this week for the 40th annual Commodity Producers Conference, talk for local farmers revolved around agriculture concerns in the region.

The conference, run by the Alabama Farmers Federation, is designed to help farmers improve the profitability of their operations. Activities included visits to farms and other agricultural points of interest in Mobile and Baldwin counties, as well as seminar topics such as hydraulic fracturing, current Alabama estate tax and annuities, farm bill and federal legislative updates, and state water issues.

Weather was the biggest concern for Alabama Gulf Coast farmers. Calvin Freeland, president of the Alfa Mobile County chapter, said it was one of the biggest factors of production in Mobile and Baldwin counties.

While much of the state and Midwest has experienced severe drought this year, southwest Alabama has received adequate rainfall. Gulf Coast farmers experienced a major drought last year, but say the crops look good so far for 2012.

Alfa spokesman Jeff Helms said there are a number of factors that impact farmers? ability to remain on their land and to be profitable including weather; the cost of feed, fertilizer, seed, energy and labor; as well as competition from foreign countries. Public perception of agriculture and how it influences public policy also is important, he said.

?We have some of the most productive farmland and we are vitally important in terms of agricultural production to the entire world,? he said. ?But we see increasingly that the way that we produce our food is being challenged, whether it be because of a food borne illness outbreak or challenges about the way animals are raised.?

Anthony Faggard, owner of Faggard Land Cattle in Grand Bay, said availability of farmland is also a hot button topic in the region.

?Over the past couple of decades, there?s been a lot of development in Mobile and Baldwin counties,? he said. ?We?re limited in how much we can expand.?

Bert Driskell, owner of Driskell Farms in Grand Bay, said that with every new piece of land paved over, the potential source of food is gone from agriculture forever.

Vandalism also has been a problem for many farmers in the area, with thieves stealing equipment parts and copper wire to sell as scrap metal. Andy Thornburg of Thornburg Farms in Wilmer, said he has had about $20,000 worth of damage so far this year related to theft, and Driskell said he has experienced the same.

Despite the recent announcement that Jerry Newby would retire as president of ALFA and Alfa Insurance Companies in December, there was little talk on who will follow as leader of one of the state?s most high-profile organizations.

Newby, in his 14th year as president of the state?s largest farm group, announced in December 2011 that he would not seek re-election, kicking off what has now become a campaign by five other members who want to succeed him. Alfa?s more than 400,000 members, through 500 voting delegates, elect the president.

The five people running to succeed Newby are state Rep. Richard Lindsey, a Cherokee County board member; John Dorrill, president of the Pike County chapter; Steve Dunn, president of the Conecuh County chapter and the current secretary-treasurer of ALFA; Jimmy Parnell, president of the Chilton County chapter; and Ricky Wiggins from Covington County, who is a vice president of ALFA.

David Bitto, president of the Baldwin County chapter, originally ran for the position but has since dropped out of the race.

Freeland said that the Mobile County chapter has not chosen a candidate to throw its weight behind, but said he wanted the president to be someone that would keep the agriculture industry going in Alabama.

?We have to defend things every day more than support them,? he said. ?We have to defend our right to grow our products. We need someone that supports agriculture.?

Cycyling - Dominant Britain floor opposition on the track

LONDON (Reuters) - Records tumbled again as Britain humbled their rivals with poster girl Victoria Pendleton capping another remarkable track cycling day for the hosts at the London Olympics in a simmering velodrome on Friday.

Britain won the two gold medals on offer as the men retained their team pursuit title in world record time before Pendleton gave her rivals no chance in the adrenaline-filled keirin.

Earlier, Britain's women laid down a marker in the team pursuit qualifying session by beating their own world record.

Four years ago, Britain had claimed seven out of the 10 possible titles. Now backed by an ecstatic capacity crowd, they look to be in a position to repeat the feat with three titles already in the bag.

"Vicky deserves a special mention because what she's done is nothing short of sensational really, she's worked extremely hard," Britain's director of performance David Brailsford told Reuters.

"She's been willing to lose to get better so she's gone to World Cups, she's gone to world championships in heavy phases of training with a long term plan of how to put all this conditioning together.

"It comes all together right at the last minute and it's when you see the full benefits of all the years of work."

Pendleton, who came to cycling under pressure from her father, waved at the crowd draped in a Union flag barely holding back the tears.

"It's the best moment of my career so far. I had a bad year in 2011 and a lot of people wrote me off and I wanted to prove them wrong," she said.

She was not the first to be greeted by the crowd, however, as Tour de France champion and Britain's most decorated Olympian Bradley Wiggins, sporting a burgundy Fred Perry jacket over a white polo shirt, paid the velodrome a visit to support his former pursuit team mates.

WIGGO VISIT

The jacket was off quickly as the temperature soared in "the pringle" when Ed Clancy, Geraint Thomas, Steven Burke and Peter Kennaugh lined up for their final against Australia after New Zealand had beaten Russia for bronze.

They took an early lead but Australia seemed back in the contest after 1500 metres, only for the Britons to hammer their rivals in the last two kilometres to slash almost one second from the world record they had set the previous day.

"Seeing your fellow Brits do so well inspires you and you want a piece of that," said Thomas, who won the title in Beijing with Wiggins, his Sky team mate.

"Seeing Bradley win the Tour and then the time trial inspired us and we wanted a part of that and it shows how good the squad is.

"There were a lot of people doubting us after Beijing and that has spurred us on even more."

While the team pursuit's victory was on the cards long before the Games, Pendleton's keirin success was not so predictable as Australian arch rival Anna Meares came into the event having dominated at the world championships.

Pendleton, who with Jessica Varnish was disqualified from the team sprint on Thursday for an illegal changeover, won her qualifying races in impressive fashion.

In the final, she produced an incredible amount of power again to leapfrog her opponents from the outside, resisting the late challenge of China's Guo Shuang as the crowd went into a delirious state.

Hong Kong's Lee Wai Sze took the bronze.

"The crowd have been fantastic, they really helped me today," said Pendleton.

"I was expecting the best Vicky and I knew she'd bounce back from the team sprint," Meares told reporters.

"I could tell Vicky was making her move because the pitch of the crowd noise changed.

"I'm surprised there were so many Brits, I thought the ticket distribution would be more even," she added sardonically.

Russian medal contender Victoria Baranova did not take part in the keirin after she was sent home by her national federation because she had failed a pre-Olympics test for testosterone.
