IEA cuts global oil demand forecasts

Faltering economic growth will undercut global oil demand this year and next, the International Energy Agency said Friday, citing slowdowns in China and the United States in particular.

"Sluggish economic growth could restrict annual oil demand growth to 0.9 million barrels per day in 2012 and 0.8 mbpd in 2013, with demand averaging 89.6 mbpd and 90.5 mbpd," down from last month's estimates of 89.9 mbpd and 90.9 mbpd, respectively, the IEA said in its latest Oil Market Report.

The IEA highlighted slower demand in the United States and China, which together account for a third of the global market, while technical changes in its calculations also cut its 2012 forecast by 0.25 mbpd.

The IEA, set up to advise developed countries on energy policy, reduced its 2013 economic growth forecast to 3.6 percent from 3.8 percent but left its 2012 estimate unchanged at 3.3 percent.

The Chinese economy, which has driven demand for oil and other commodities for the past 20 years, was likely to grow 8.0 percent this year, instead of 8.2 percent, rising marginally to 8.1 percent in 2013, rather than 8.5 percent.

Chinese data this week bears out that picture, with the government expected to announce fresh stimulus measures to keep growth at around 8.0 percent, the minimum necessary to provide enough new jobs to keep unemployment at bay.

The IEA put US growth next year at 2.0 percent, down from the 2.3 estimate it gave in last month's report.

Global oil supply in July rose 0.3 mbpd from June to 90.7 mbpd, representing an annual gain of 2.6 mbpd, the IEA said.

OPEC July supply was put at 31.39 mbpd, down marginally as lower output in Iran, Libya and Angola offset increased production in Iraq, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, it added.

On Thursday, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries increased its global demand forecast marginally, to 88.72 mbpd from 88.68 mbpd in July.

Demand for 2013 was put at 89.52 mbpd, up from 89.50 mbpd last month, representing an increase of 0.81 mbpd from 2012, it said.

"World oil demand has overcome earlier expectations of a declining momentum and moved to a more stabilised trend, supported by the summer driving season, the summer heat and the continued shutdown of most of Japan's nuclear capacity," the OPEC cartel said in its report.

OPEC warned at the same time of considerable uncertainty ahead, adding: "The gloomy picture could reduce the world oil demand growth forecast by 20 percent next year."

The IEA said Iranian oil output continued to fall as Western sanctions over its disputed nuclear programme tightened, with July production down to 2.9 mbpd from 3.0 mbpd in June and compared with 3.6 mbpd late last year.

Imports of Iranian oil were down more dramatically, at 1.0 mbpd in July from 1.74 mbpd in June but the IEA stressed that its figures were preliminary and the numbers could rise next month.

At the same time, it estimated that Iran would struggle to find buyers for some 1.0 mbpd of oil over the second half of 2012.

Friday's forecast downgrade was the IEA's fourth this year, after cuts in January, February and June.

Oil prices were lower late morning Friday as the markets took the latest Chinese trade data as a further indication that economic growth in the world's largest energy consumer is slowing, analysts said.

New York's main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in September, was down to $92.41 a barrel from $93 earlier, while Brent North Sea crude for September delivery fell to $112.17 from $112.86.

Chinese data earlier this week showing retail sales, industrial output and inflation all down highlighted how that export-driven economy was feeling the effects of Europe's debt crisis.

"The economic data out of China certainly has been bearish .... It's not good news and has prompted equities and oil... to move down," said Victor Shum, senior principal of Purvin and Gertz energy consultants in Singapore.

After nearly every performance ? whether the floor exercise, pommel horse, or rings ? Alvarez showered his son with kisses and hugs.

?It?s extremely important for both parents to show their child affection,? says Dr. Nogales, who notes that for stepparents like Alvarez, sharing a passion with their step-child is a wonderful way to bond. ?Providing for your child goes so much further than making sure they?re fed, clothed. Affection is the most preliminary, basic need that we all have and for a young person, demonstrating love for them is an integral part of feeling support and unconditional love.?

No one is perfect ? but each day is a fresh start

Olympians practice their sport day in and day out for years hoping to become gold medal athletes. But all of that arduous practice and dedication doesn?t necessarily yield a perfect score performance ? just ask John Orozco or Ryan Lochte. Parents should encourage their children to use mistakes as a learning opportunity, says Dr. Nogales, stressing the fact that mistakes are a chance to mature.

?When a child makes a mistake, parents should take time to sit down and ask them how they can avoid making the same mistake again,? suggests Dr. Nogales. ?There?s no point in examining the degree of the mistake or immediately providing a solution on how to rectify the situation.? And while offering pointers on how to avoid a similar mistake going forward may seem easiest in terms of time, says Dr. Nogales, in the long run, you?re depriving your child the process of self-discovery and growth.

?It?s extremely important for children to know what their parent?s passions are,? explains Dr. Nogales, who founded Casa de la Familia, a non-profit mental health wellness center for the Latino community in Santa Ana, California. ?And if your child makes that passion their own, great. But sometimes parents can have an expectation that your child will follow your footsteps and unconsciously, can project their goals onto them ? which is very unhealthy.?

So go ahead: expose your child to your interests and hobbies, but encourage them to make their own choices and respect their passions ? because ultimately, your relationship will be stronger for it.

Hockey's Mike Modano, actress Willa Ford divorcing

DALLAS (AP) ? Retired hockey star Mike Modano and actress Willa Ford have decided to end their five-year marriage.

Modano spokesman Rob Scichili (SHICK'-lee) said Wednesday the couple was divorcing but didn't have further details. The 42-year-old Modano and Ford married in 2007 in Athens, Texas.

Modano is the highest-scoring American-born player in NHL history with 561 goals and 1,374 points. He spent 21 years with the Stars in Minnesota and Dallas and retired after one season with the Detroit Red Wings, closer to his hometown of Livonia, Mich.

The 31-year-old Ford was on "Dancing With the Stars" in 2006 and now appears in the Starz television drama "Magic City."

Now that I have a new job, I?m working in a whole new area. When I first started my career I was working at a university in downtown Boston, right on Beacon Hill (home of the State House, Boston Common, the Public Garden, Cheers, the Granary Burying Ground, Park Street Church, and my favorite pub, the 21st Amendment). I loved that part of the city and will always have fond memories of it.

When I left that job I started a new one out in the suburbs. It was a big change from city working and commuting. It familiarized me with a whole new area: the ?burbs bordering Boston to the southwest. However, my new job is back in Boston proper but in a part of the city I?ve not spent much time in. It?s a bustling area that I?m very excited to explore. Like all major pockets of Boston, it is clustered around a whole bunch of colleges, in this case: Harvard, Northeastern, Wentworth, MassArt, Simmons, Emmanuel, and the Mass. College of Pharmacy (not to mention the Museum of Fine Arts and all the major hospitals in Boston). So there?s one thing you can expect ? great places to eat lunch. I?m slowly but surely going to tackle them all but I discovered a diamond within my first week of working here that I just had to share: the Clover Food Truck.

Clover has 11 locations all over the city of Boston. Business is booming for them, as it should be. Their menu has only about a dozen items on it but the selection is great and they execute each one perfectly.

I ordered a lavender lemonade to drink which was super refreshing and very lavendery! I had the rosemary fries on the side which were perfectly seasoned. The rosemary sprigs fried together with the fries were the perfect compliment.

I pulled up a spot on the grass right next to Clover to enjoy my lunch in the shade.

Last but not least I ordered the BBQ Seitan sandwich. For those who don?t know, seitan is a meat substitute made from wheat protein/gluten. The texture is great, chewy and meaty; the perfect meat substitute. I was introduced to it in college and have enjoyed it for the last 10 years. Clover?s BBQ Seitan sandwich is seitan marinated in BBQ sauce, mayo, green leaf lettuce, local tomatoes, caramelized onions, and Vermont cheddar cheese on fresh pita bread. It was delicious.

I really can?t wait to go back. Clover has so many great items I can?t wait to try ? basil limeade, chickpea fritters, gazpacho, soy BLT, the list goes on and on!
