Accelerator Driven Treatment of Nuclear Waste
I'm the guy who write the software for the reactor (and the accelerator) of TFA. And yes, it run Linux, on embedded Xilinx cards with custom FPGAs. GOP: Obama has failed to address deficit
The United States is in financial trouble, but President Barack Obama says the federal debt ?is nothing to worry about,? a Senate Republican charged Saturday.
Presenting the GOP?s weekly address, Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama said ?the American people see the financial chaos. They know it must stop,? The Hill reported.
Sessions, the ranking Republican on the Senate Budget Committee., said the president had failed to rally the country to deal with the problem.
?Instead, he says our debt course is nothing to worry about,? Sessions said. ?He continues to insist that his budget plan will pay down the debt.?
Sessions said the president?s budget reduction plan provides for no surplus, which was needed to pay down the debt.
?Despite $1.8 trillion in new taxes, his budget increases our spending and debt every year, adding $11 trillion to the debt overall,? he said.
The administration has previously rejected such claims. The White House website says, ?Since his first day in office, President Obama has focused on laying the foundation for an economy built to last???creating jobs for American workers, cutting taxes for middle class families and small businesses, investing in education, manufacturing and American-made energy, and making sure everyone plays by the same rules, from Main Street to Wall Street.?
Sessions charged Senate Democrats ?have deliberately violated the legal requirement to produce a budget plan? for a third year in a row, examiner.com reported.
With an eye on the November elections and the potential to shift control of the Senate to the GOP, Sessions claimed that ?if given the chance, Republicans will get this government under control.?

Security researchers identify transit system exploit in San Fran and New Jersey, create app to prove it
Mobile security company Intrepidus Group presented evidence during the EUSecWest security conference potentially identifying a major flaw in at least two US transit systems. Creating an Android app named "UltraReset" and using it in tandem with an NFC-enabled Android phone (a Nexus S, in this case), security researchers Corey Benninger and Max Sobell were able to reset and reuse -- free of charge -- transit access cards in both San Francisco's MUNI system and New Jersey's PATH system. Before you go getting any bad ideas, know that Benninger and Sobell haven't released the app for public use, and warned both transit systems in late 2011 (though neither region has fixed the exploit, the duo claim). PATH and MUNI share a common chip access card -- the Mifare Ultralight -- which can apparently be reset for 10 extra rides (as demonstrated on video below) via Android phones with NFC, an OS newer than 2.3.3 (Gingerbread). Starting to sound familiar?
Intrepidus is, however, releasing a modified version of the app, named "UltraCardTester." The modified app functions just like its nefarious progenitor, except it can't add time to cards (see it in action below). The app can tell you how many rides you have left, and if a system is open to exploit, but it won't assist you in the act of exploiting. We reached out to both New Jersey's PATH and San Francisco MUNI on the issue, but have yet to hear back as of publishing.

The last full day of summer is here. The autumnal equinox arrives tomorrow at 10:49 am EDT. I bet there are a LOT of you out there jumping for joy in anticipation of cooler temperatures and some fall rains. I can?t say as I blame you one little bit. Temperatures in the 100?s are a bit crazy IMHO.
I on the other hand, had a nice summer, plenty of warm temps and bright sunny days and am a little sad to see it go. The leaves are changing some right in this area and really changing on the mountains. This particular area is usually later for peak foliage viewing owning to the nice wide Champlain Valley and moderate climate for these parts.

The image above is way better than the one I took of the same thing.? This scene is located a couple hours north of here. No need to travel very far as scenes like this rule the short autumn foliage season just about anywhere you go.? It?s also little wonder the area is a destination for thousands of ?leaf peepers?.

The end of the active flight missions of the Space Shuttle Program is being celebrated with the transfer of the space shuttles to various museums for permanent display in an effort to further educate the public about the successful program. Endeavour will be the last shuttle to be transferred via the shuttle carrier aircraft thus making it the last time a shuttle will fly, a very historic moment in NASA?s history. This last ferry flight will originate from Kennedy Space Center prior to embarking on the historic last leg of the flight throughout the state of California into Los Angeles International Airport. We are extremely fortunate to have this rare opportunity to view Endeavour as she arrives in California.
Goal
To engage the public, specifically the students, in a fun way to document this historical event of the Endeavor Flyover, while also promoting NASA STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math).
Overview
By reaching out to California School districts, the challenge is for students to take a photograph of the shuttle flyover and/or during the transport from LAX to the California Science Center.
These pictures can then be uploaded (by teachers) and then a panel of judges will select ?winning photos?. Winning photos may be posted on NASA websites, and exhibited for NASA visitor centers and other education venues, or used for other NASA purposes. There will be an option of having a NASA day at the winning school sites.
