Why Humans Love To Keep Pets

By Krystal D'Costa
(Click here for the original article)

I?ll never forget the day S brought home a live chicken. When we lived in Queens, there were a number of fresh poultry and livestock suppliers that catered to the growing West Indian community so live poultry was readily available, but there were also a few backyard farmers in the neighborhood. S was at a gas station when he heard a cheeping noise. He knelt down to investigate and when he straightened up, found a chick sitting on the mat in the car. ?What was I supposed to do?? he asked showing me the chick later that day. ?It jumped in the car.?

His affinity with animals is nothing new. He trained goldfish. He has refused to kill mice, insisting on releasing them into the wild. At fifteen, he nursed a pigeon back to health after setting its broken wing. During a trip to Trinidad, he befriended a bull?despite being warned away by my uncles?by sitting in the mud with it for hours. And today, we are the proud parents of two cats (we did not keep Chicken Little) who can?t seem to get enough of him. I am definitely second fiddle in their feline minds?though handy to have around when they need to be fed.

S is not alone. Pat Shipman (2010) notes the significance of pets?and animals?in our lives:

In both the United States and Australia, 63% of households include pets, compared to 43% of British and 20% of Japanese households. In the United States, the proportion of households with pets is larger than those with children (522).

This relationship, dubbed the animal connection by Shipman, may have played an important role in human evolution, linking the traits that distinguish Homo sapiens from other mammals. How is it that some animals transitioned from food to friends, and what is the significance of this relationship?

The animal connection is the process by which pets or livestock become companions and/or partners, and are treated as members of the family. It refers to the close relationship between animals and humans starting 2.6 million years ago (mya), beginning with the use and study of animals by humans, and leading to regular social interactions. Today this is manifested in the adoption of animals and the care provided to them in the course of that relationship. The roots of this relationship may be found in the development of three often recognized traits of humans: making and using tools, symbolic behavior (including language, adornment, and rituals), and domestication of other species. Shipman views the animal connection as a fourth trait, tying the other three together and having an immense effect on human evolution, genetics, and behavior (2010: 522).

Though tool use has been documented in other nonhuman mammals, the manufacture and use of tools by humans is an extremely complex behavior. Modern chimpanzees are often recognized for their tool usage, but this usage varies whereas humans consistently use tools. Early humans used tools to process carcasses, and we have evidence of this from the marks left on the bones after contact with implements. Stone tools gave humans an advantage: they no longer needed to compete with scavengers. They could hunt game on their own and/or drive off those scavengers if needed. The increased meat in the human diet meant that humans occupied a predatory niche, and as such necessarily needed to disperse so that their localities could support their needs. While Shipman makes clear that the fossil record supports that expansion of geographic range about 2 mya, the more interesting point, in my opinion, is that in seeking out live game, humans needed to learn about their prey, which opened the door for a more meaningful relationship with animals.

Wild animals are certainly able to communicate with each other, but language has thus far largely been relegated to humans, who have a clearly identifiable syntax and grammar (520). Animals have alarm calls, but there are limits to what they can communicate. For instance, a chimp alerting his troupe about a snake cannot provide details about the snake: The chimp cannot say it is a brown snake. (Or maybe it can, and we just don?t know.) And while educated apes may have a vocabulary of about 400 words, they don?t apply syntax and grammar to those words (520). Language allows humans to share information, and we have developed delightfully complicated means of doing so:

Ritual, art, ochre, and personal adornment are used to transmit information about such concepts as beliefs, group membership, or style, leaving physical manifestations visible in the archaeological record. Nothing interpreted as art, ritual, the use of ochre, or personal adornment has been reported in nonhuman mammals in the wild (521).

As more sophisticated stone tools were developed, humans could pursue larger game. But this might often require collaboration, which encouraged language. Perhaps the strongest example of this is prehistoric art which depicts animals extensively, revealing morphology, coloring, behaviors, and sexual dimorphism (Shipman 2010: 524). It creates a record to be shared with others.

Domestication required humans to select for desirable behavioral traits and control the reproductive and genetic output over generations. They lived in close proximity to the animals, historically even bringing them into the home. Indeed, the physical closeness of humans to animals has allowed some infectious diseases to enter the human population from animal hosts, e.g., measles (dogs), mumps (poultry), tuberculosis (cattle), and the common cold (horses) (529). However, the benefits have outweighed the costs when it comes to keeping animals near?animals are much more than a food source:

The Goyet dog is at least 17,000 years older than the next oldest domesticate (also a dog) ? animals were domesticated first because their treatment was an extension of tool making (Shipman 2010: 524).

Animals were domesticated as living tools. They expanded the reach of humans and made other resources more accessible. Animals could provide labor, milk, wool, and opportunities for the production of tools and clothing. And domestication was hedged on an understanding of biology, ecology, physiology, temperament and intelligence.

While much has been made of the monkey who appears to have adopted a cat, such cross-species alloparenting is rare. Humans are the exception. We routinely take in animals integrate them into our families, creating a beneficial relationship. Our connection to Fido may be deeply rooted in our evolutionary history.

Delay for space station's 1st private cargo run (AP)

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. ? The first commercial cargo run to the International Space Station is off until spring.

SpaceX planned to launch its unmanned supply ship from Cape Canaveral on Feb. 7. But the company said more testing was needed with the spacecraft, named Dragon. And on Friday, officials confirmed the launch would not occur until late March.

Space station commander Daniel Burbank said as much as he'd like to take part in the historic event, it's important that SpaceX fly when it's ready. Burbank will return to Earth in mid-March.

"If that's not to be during our mission, then that's OK," Burbank said in an interview Friday with The Associated Press. "We've got plenty of other things to occupy us ... but they'll fly when they're ready and they'll fly when they need to."

Just over a year ago, the California-based Space Exploration Technologies Corp. launched a test version of the capsule, becoming the first private business to send a spacecraft into orbit and return it safely. NASA is counting on companies like SpaceX to keep the station stocked, now that the shuttles are retired.

Until then, the Russian, European and Japanese space agencies ? all government entities ? are picking up the slack as best they can, sending up regular shipments to the orbiting outpost.

SpaceX spokeswoman Kirstin Grantham pointed out that this is a developmental program for her company, and everyone wants it to be a complete success.

"It may take a little more time, but when it happens, it's going to be amazing," she said.

This first Dragon capsule to visit the space station will carry several hundred pounds of astronaut provisions ? nothing crucial, in case of a failure.

Astronauts aboard the space station will use a huge robot arm to grab and berth the Dragon.

"This will be one step in the long road to human expansion off of the planet into low-Earth orbit and beyond," space station astronaut Donald Pettit said Friday. He is barely one month into a five-month mission.

The beauty of the Dragon is that it will be able to return scientific samples to Earth, Burbank noted. None of the other countries' supply ships can do that; they burn up on re-entry.

Americans Burbank and Pettit, three Russians and a Dutchman make up the six-man crew.

NASA closed out its 30-year shuttle program last July.

"There have been some impacts ... the shuttle did all the heavy lifting" for space station, Burbank said. There's excess equipment and trash on board, especially given the loss of a Russian supply ship in a launch accident last year. Those cargo carriers are filled with garbage before being jettisoned.

"I think we're getting by OK," Burbank said, "but we need to have as much up-mass and down-mass capability as we can to support space station operations at the level we need it."

SpaceX ? run by PayPal co-founder Elon Musk ? is one of several companies vying for space station visiting privileges. Its long-term goal is to modify its Falcon rocket and Dragon capsule to ferry astronauts to the station.

In the meantime, Americans are buying seats on Russian Soyuz spacecraft.

How Do I Quit a Job I Just Started? [Ask Lifehacker]

How Do I Quit a Job I Just Started?Dear Lifehacker,
I started a new job a month ago and now realize it's not really a good fit for me. Even after a month I'm still not comfortable and I dread going in every morning. Can I quit without looking like a total jerk?

Sincerely,
Anxious About Quitting

Dear Anxious,
Ouch. We've all had that sinking feeling. You get home from work and realize you're unhappy and it dawns on you: You may have made a bad job decision. It is possible to leave without screwing everyone over, but you should consider a few things before you make your choice.

How to Know It's Time to Quit

How Do I Quit a Job I Just Started?Starting a new job is jarring. Your schedule changes, your workday is mixed around, and you're bombarded with new information around every corner. You have to learn the politics, people's names, your boss' quirks, and new systems for everything. For the first few days or weeks, you might be anxious and confused. If a month or two pass and you still don't feel comfortable, it might be time to think about leaving. Career coach Jeanne Knight suggests asking yourself a few questions first.

  • Is it just the newness of the job?
  • What will I learn if I stay in this job?
  • If the scope of the job has changed, can it be renegotiated?

Answering these questions can shed some light on why you feel the need to leave. If the workload is more than you expected, you can try to renegotiate your pay or benefits accordingly. Think about the schedule change and the newness of the job as well. Did you go from waiting tables to a 9 to 5 office job? It might take longer to grow accustomed to a new routine.

Sometimes, though, you just know in your gut a job isn't right for you. I once worked at a Papa John's restaurant for a single evening and knew within the first hour I was never going back. My solution? Like the pompous teenage jerk I was, I no-called, no-showed. Don't do that. Instead, let's look at a few of the best ways to make a respectable exit. Photo by Rusty Haskell.

How to Give Your Notice

How Do I Quit a Job I Just Started? If you answered the questions above and decided your new job isn't right for you, it's time to give your notice. It's easy to just stop showing up (it's not like you've formed any lasting bonds), but it will burn the bridges you made with the company and your coworkers, and, frankly, it's just poor form.

I talked with Julia Nelson, lead recruiter at First Western Trust Bank to see how a human resources department prefers to handle a situation like this. She has two suggestions for two different types of circumstances:

Once you start, if something about the job, your manager, or the company comes as a surprise and clashes with your moral or other values (for example, they're asking you to steal puppies, never mentioned puppy stealing before, and stealing puppies makes you feel terrible), give a courtesy two week notice, but mention that you would feel more comfortable quitting right now.

The above advice can also be applied if you're feeling overwhelmed at a position where you're relied on for the safety of others. Whether it's caring for senior citizens or teaching snowboarding to children, if you don't feel like you can do the job right, ask to leave immediately. But what about when you just think the job sucks and it's not what you want? Julia offers this advice:

If it is something more than boredom and uncertainty, speak to your manager openly about your concerns. Maybe you can unearth why they weren't brought up in the interview process and move forward on better footing. Maybe you will mutually decide this is just not a good fit. In this instance you can offer two weeks notice, but they may ask you to leave sooner. I suggest offering two weeks notice because you don't want to burn any bridges, but exhaust all options before you come to the conclusion to leave.

Finally, if it's absolutely time to drop the position, job search engine Monster adds that you should be completely honest and apologetic when giving your notice in person. Don't lie about the reasons or make excuses, just tell your employer how it is. Leaving is beneficial for them in the long run if you're not a good fit, so don't feel guilty or make excuses. Photo by CedarBendDrive.

Don't Forget to Sweat the Small Stuff

No matter how rough a job is, don't forget to factor in the income and benefits you lose when you leave. If you don't have another job lined up, make sure you have enough cash tucked away to cover your living expenses before you put in your notice. Even if you leave because you found a better job, benefits can take anywhere from a month to a year to set in. If you're reliant on health insurance consider the time you won't be covered. We've looked at how to find health insurance on your own before, but the options, unfortunately, aren't great. The same goes for other benefits you're leaving behind, including retirement plans, flex plans, or other investments. Check with your boss or human resources department for how to transfer your plans into a new or personal account.

Prevent it from Happening Again

How Do I Quit a Job I Just Started?Hopefully you learned from your mistake, but if you decide to leave, chances are you're already planning on interviewing again. Julia has one simple suggestion for preventing the situation from happening again:

As a job seeker, you have the right to ask many, many questions of the hiring manager and HR team before you decide if you would like to take a position. You are interviewing a company just as much as they are interviewing you. Before you accept a position you should be able to envision yourself in the office, know some of the team you would be working with, understand what is expected of you in the role, and have a good "gut" feeling about going to that job everyday.

It's good advice regardless of when you're interviewing, but if you're coming hot off the heels of a poor job choice, it's a solid technique to assure yourself you're making the right decision. Hopefully you're comfortable with your decision to leave (or stay), and good luck in your next job search! Photo by Samuel Mann.

Sincerely,
Lifehacker

P.S. Have you walked out of a job right after starting? We'd love to hear your experiences in the comments.

US citizen kidnapped in Nigeria's oil delta

(AP) ? Assailants kidnapped a U.S. citizen leaving a bank in Nigeria's oil-rich southern delta Friday, the first such attack targeting foreigners in the restive region for several months.

The attack happened in Warri, the capital of Delta state, local police spokesman Charles Muka said. Investigators believe the assailants trailed the man to the bank and waited outside before kidnapping him, Muka said.

Kidnappers later made contact with authorities and demanded a $333,000 ransom, he said.

The attack occurred in Nigeria's oil-rich Niger Delta, where foreign firms have pumped oil out of the country for more than 50 years. Despite the billions flowing into Nigeria's government, many in the delta remain desperately poor, living in polluted waters without access to proper medical care, education or work.

In 2006, militants started a wave of attacks targeting foreign oil companies, including bombing their pipelines, kidnapping their workers and fighting with security forces. That violence waned in 2009 with a government-sponsored amnesty program promising ex-fighters monthly payments and job training. However, few in the delta have seen the promised benefits.

While foreign workers have become harder to target, local kidnapping gangs have begun seizing middle-class Nigerians as well.

Deb MacLean, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria's capital Abuja, said diplomats there were aware of the kidnapping.

"We continue to monitor the situation closely and assist," MacLean said Friday night.

In 2011, there were five reported kidnappings of U.S. citizens in Nigeria, according to a recent U.S. State Department travel warning about the country. The most recent occurred in November when two U.S. citizens and a Mexican were kidnapped from a Chevron Corp. offshore oil field and held for about two weeks, the State Department said.

Google: Quarter-billion Android devices worldwide, 11 billion downloads

Google

Google today announced its Q4 2011 earnings. Money-wise, Google say $2.71 billion in profit on $8.13 billion in revenue.

For our purposes, the news is that El Goog announced that some 250 million devices -- that's a quarter-billion devices, or 250,000,000 if you're into numbers -- have been activated, up 50 million from Q3 2011. Or, 555,000 or so activated every day. (Remember that Android is now up to 700,000 activations.) Of those 50 million devices activated for the final three months of the year, 3.7 million came over the holidays, a number Google had already announced.

Google also announced that the Android Market has seen 11 billion downloads. That's 1 billion more than when Google had its 10 billion-download celebration a month ago.

Google's in the middle of its earnings call. We'll update with any new developments.

Navy actions help cut Somali pirate hijacking: watchdog (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Pre-emptive strikes by naval forces, the deployment of private armed guards and protective measures by ships helped to almost halve the number of successful hijackings by Somali pirates last year, a maritime watchdog said on Thursday.

Seaborne gangs are making tens of millions of dollars in ransoms, and despite successful efforts to quell attacks in the Gulf of Aden, international naval forces have limited resources and vast distances to patrol in the Indian Ocean.

The International Maritime Bureau (IMB), which has been monitoring piracy worldwide since 1991, said in its latest report that Somali pirates continued to account for over half the total number of attacks worldwide.

The number of Somali incidents increased to 237 last year from 219 in 2010, but the number of successful hijackings fell to 28 vessels from 49 in 2010, the IMB said.

"Pre-emptive naval strikes, the hardening of vessels in line with the best management practices and the deterrent effect of privately contracted armed security personnel have all contributed to this decrease," IMB director Pottengal Mukundan said.

He said the number of vessels using private armed guards increased last year but the regulation and vetting of guards had still to be "adequately addressed." Industry players remain concerned over legal issues if there are deaths, and a greater risk of shooting incidents if unregulated security firms are used.

The IMB said that in the last quarter of 2011 alone, pre-emptive strikes by naval forces disrupted at least 20 groups of pirates before they could threaten commercial fleets.

"The overall figures for Somali piracy could have been a lot higher if it were not for the continued efforts of international naval forces patrolling and responding to the threat," it said.

West Africa also remained a piracy hotspot last year. Attacks in the Gulf of Guinea have increased as the area, spanning a dozen countries, is a growing source of oil, cocoa and metals being shipped to the world's markets.

While 10 attacks were reported in Nigeria, including two hijackings, the IMB said the number "was not representative of the real threat of Nigeria."

"Under-reporting of attacks in Nigeria continues to be a cause for concern and IMB states that it is aware of at least another 34 unreported incidents in Nigerian waters," it said.

In neighboring Benin there were 20 incidents involving oil tankers, eight of which were hijacked and had cargoes partly stolen. There were no reported incidents in Benin in 2010.

"Although the average length of captivity for ships taken off the coasts of Nigeria and Benin tends to be roughly 10 days, compared to six months in Somali hijackings, IMB warns that these attacks can be more violent," it said.

The IMB said that worldwide, the number of piracy incidents edged down to 439 last year from 445 in 2010. This followed a four-year stretch of rising piracy and armed robbery.

It said 802 crew members were taken hostage in 2011, down from a four-year high of 1,181 in 2010. Eight crew members were killed in 2011, the same as in 2010.

Markets shrug off S&P downgrades, focus on Greece (AP)

LONDON ? European markets responded calmly to Standard & Poor's decision to cut the credit ratings of a number of euro countries as France managed to tap bond market investors Monday despite the loss of its cherished triple-A rating.

The downgrades, which were based on concerns over Europe's ability to handle its two-year debt crisis and the lack of economic growth, had been anticipated for weeks so the market impact was muted, especially since the U.S. is on holiday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Europe is set to remain the focus of attention all week as a number of bond auctions are due and Greece tries to clinch a debt deal with its private creditors. Last October, Greece's partners in the eurozone sanctioned a deal whereby Greece's creditors agree to take a cut in the value of their Greek bond holdings to help lighten the country's debt burden.

The deal with private investors, known as the Private Sector Involvement, or PSI, aims to reduce Greece's debt by euro100 billion ($126.5 billion) by swapping private creditors' bonds for new ones with a lower value. It is a key part of a euro130 billion international bailout, the second one for Greece.

It is expected that talks on the PSI will resume this coming week after being abandoned last Friday.

On Tuesday, representatives of Greece's creditors ? the European Union, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund ? will visit Greece for yet another round of inspections of its efforts at fiscal and structural reform and negotiations for the next tranche of money, the seventh, from the first bailout.

Without a deal with its private creditors, Greece has been told it won't get the seventh tranche. Without that, Greece would be unable to pay a big bond redemption in March and face the prospect of defaulting on its debts, potentially triggering more mayhem in financial markets.

Gary Jenkins, a director of Swordfish Research, reckons the Greek debt restructuring poses more risks to the markets in the short-term than S&P's decision to strip France of its cherished triple A credit rating or to downgrade eight other euro countries, including Italy.

"The progress or otherwise of these negotiations will probably dictate how the market trades over the next few weeks," said Jenkins.

Greece's Prime Minister Lucas Papademos insisted in an interview with CNBC that a deal will be hammered out.

"Some further reflection is necessary on how to put all the elements together," he said. "So as you know, there is a little pause in these discussions. But I'm confident that they will continue and we will reach an agreement that is mutually acceptable in time."

While investors awaited developments, markets were trading modestly higher especially after France easily sold short-term debt to investors in the first auction since Standard & Poor's stripped the country of its top tier rating.

Meanwhile, there was further good news in the bond markets as yield on France's ten-year bonds was falling back toward the 3 percent mark, which is well within what is considered manageable.

In stock markets, France's CAC-40 closed 0.9 percent higher at 3,225 while Germany's DAX rose 1.3 percent to 6,220.01. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares ended 0.4 percent higher at 5,657.44.

The euro was also steady, up 0.2 percent at $1.2675. On Friday, it had fallen to a 17-month dollar low of $1.2623 as speculation swirled in the markets of S&P's downgrades.

Earlier in Asia, markets responded more negatively to the S&P downgrades, which were confirmed after U.S. and European markets had closed on Friday. Asian markets had already closed by the time speculation of the downgrades emerged.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index slid 1.4 percent to close at 8,378.36 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 1 percent at 19,021.20. South Korea's Kospi dropped 0.9 percent to 1,859.25.

In mainland China, the Shanghai Composite Index lost 1.7 percent to 2,206.19, while the smaller Shenzhen Composite Index dropped 3.3 percent to 818.17. Almost 70 companies plunged the daily limit of 10 percent.

In the oil markets, traders are fretting over simmering tensions in the Middle East and Nigeria ? benchmark oil rose $1 to $99.70 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Money Ball for Medicine ? Business Models for Healthcare ...

Editor?s note:?This guest post was written by?Dave Chase, the CEO of?Avado.com, a patient portal & relationship management company that was a?TechCrunch Disrupt finalist. Previously he was a management consultant for Accenture?s healthcare practice and founder of Microsoft?s Health platform business. You can follow him on Twitter@chasedave.

Entrepreneurial epiphanies surface in random places. For Eric Page, it was watching Brad Pitt?s latest movie, Moneyball. The epiphany caused him to shift Amplify Health?s business model from a provider of technology to a heavy user of technology. While there is a wave of disruptive technology in healthtech, as interesting is the wave of disruptive innovation on the care delivery side of healthcare. These companies aren?t technology companies, however technology plays a pivotal role.

Previously, Page had been the Founder & President of REM Medical, a clinic for sufferers of sleep apnea. A key part of any sleep clinic?s service is prescribing CPAP machines. The problem is that the percentage of people who actually follow-through is quite low (40%) even though the results can dramatically improve one?s life. A series of behavioral insights, often applied through the use of technology allowed REM Medical to double the industry average adherence to 79%. As healthcare shifts from a ?do more, bill more? model of reimbursement to a value and outcomes-based model, these kinds of results will separate the winners from the losers. Amplify Health?s original vision was to package the behavioral insights in software and sell them to providers.

With the success of his previous company, Page thought it would be easy to sell this vision to healthcare providers. Unfortunately, many healthcare providers are making the same mistakes that newspaper companies made in the late 90?s. That is, they aren?t moving as quickly as circumstances dictate. The problem is that urgency is sometimes only evident in hindsight. This is what led to the Moneyball epiphany.

For those who haven?t seen the movie or read the book, Moneyball tells the story of how Major League Baseball?s Oakland A?s Billy Beane (the team?s General Manager) was faced with a payroll that was one-third the size of their competition. Beane realized he needed to come up with a different way of picking players or he?d lose bidding wars against richer teams. For over 20 years, baseball statistician Bill James had proffered theories of baseball statistics that flew in the face of conventional wisdom on what statistics best represented a player?s value to a team. James was ignored until Billy Beane came along. He applied James? theories with great success regularly fielding playoff teams that had one-third to one-half the payroll of the teams they competed against.

While watching Moneyball, Page had the realization that he had been acting like Bill James evangelizing his theories. Even with a successful track record, he wasn?t getting the traction he desired. Instead, he decided he should become Billy Beane and apply his knowledge to his own company. Rather than monetize via a software licensing model, Amplify Health will be in the onsite clinic segment delivering primary care and managing chronic conditions. [See DIY Health Reform: Employers Solving Healthcare Crisis One Onsite Clinic At A Time for more on onsite clinics.]

Amplify Health isn?t alone in this trend. Other examples include MedLion, One Medical Group, Qliance and White Glove Health [Disclosure: MedLion is a customer of Avado's]. These are healthcare providers who?ve applied technology to enhance their competitive advantage. Traditional healthcare providers should be on notice about these types of disruptive innovators. After all, in the late 90?s the newspaper companies were worried about other media competitors and big players such as Microsoft. What devastated their business models was an array of niche competitors who bit by bit hollowed out chunks of their business. Companies such as Monster.com, eBay, Cars.com, Zillow, Craigslist and many others. Like newspapers that were oligopolies or monopolies, many large health systems haven?t been faced with the level of competition that is emerging. As William Gibson has stated, ?the future is here, it?s just unevenly distributed.?

By definition, the legacy HealthIT vendors have optimized their solutions around the legacy reimbursement and delivery models that have created the hyperinflation in healthcare crushing family, business and government budgets. The exciting aspect of this for the healthtech startup community is entire new categories of software are emerging to support disruptive innovation taking place on the care delivery side. Even more promising is that many providers, payers and pharmaceutical companies have set up innovation groups. I wrote about one earlier ? Healthcare Field of Dreams In Idaho: Health System Opens Innovation Center. An array of new models are being tested at organizations such as Horizon Health Innovations, Catholic Health West, Trinity Health, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida, Catholic Health Partners, and many others.

Often what has passed for innovation in healthcare is a clever way to maximize the latest reimbursement code or government incentive. For example, a large swath of providers are chasing after Meaningful Use incentives. Meanwhile, there are others building a sustainable competitive advantage in rethinking delivery models from the ground up. Not long ago, CareMore was acquired for $800 Million by WellPoint because they?d developed a creative new delivery model. VCs are taking notice. For example, Dirk Lammerts, MD is a VC with the Burrill Venture Capital Group who has stated he will avoid investing in businesses dependent on Medicare reimbursement. Rather, he wants true disruptive innovation.

Taking place this week is the Health Innovation Summit being put on by RockHealth. I?m moderating a panel on business models for health-related startups ? panel members include Linda Avey, Ron Gutman and Jennifer Wong. I will speak to some of the aforementioned business models and the accompanying business models for companies that support those entities. Collectively, we?ll discuss models ranging from monetizing mobile apps to how value can be derived as a byproduct of customer use (e.g., PracticeFusion) to media models and more. What creative business models in healthcare should we be aware of? Please add your comments below.

Creating Alternatives About Wellbeing & Maternity Insurance ...

Individual medical related insurance policies that cover maternity bills including your Obstetrician and the hospital costs for new child ward are inclined to be considerably additional expensive than very similar policies that never supply coverage for pregnancy-related bills. Many of my coverage holders fork out as considerably as 5 hundred bucks additional every single month to have maternity coverage.

Maternity Insurance policies: When need to you include or drop coverage?

Ideally, you need to be able to buy medical related insurance coverage that addresses the cost of childbirth just prior to you get pregnant and drop it correct after your final take a look at with your publish partum take a look at. Having said that the concern of pre present ailments and unplanned pregnancy can make your selection of when to improve to yet another healthcare insurance coverage additional complicated.

Pre-present Problems and Maternity Ideas

Maternity insurance are not able to essentially be extra or dropped at any time. If you might be want to save cash by removing your maternity insurance rider and acquiring a healthcare insurance coverage that does not contain coverage for the cost of pregnancy, you may well have a difficult time if you have a pre-present situation. This is also true when you want to transfer to a healthcare that addresses maternity. Bear in brain that pregnancy is a pre-present situation. Since of this, if you are preganant at the time you apply or on the successful date of your coverage, your software will be denied by most non-public overall health insurance firms.

A Obtaining Strategy for Pregnancy Insurance policies

We have uncovered that a lot of households do much better when they purchase when they purchase separate policies. Generally the blueprints that cover pregnancy will have other coverage that they will uncover unnecessary. Generally the spouse need to get separate overall health insurance plan than her husband and the rest of the household.

This functions effectively for a lot of of my customers. Having said that, bigger households will just about normally save by getting a single healthcare coverage. There are other factors that can make a big difference. A great individual overall health insurance broker need to be able to aid you determine which choice is very best for you.

Timing the purchase of maternity coverage is only a person concern you need to take into consideration when getting medical related insurance. You will want to make guaranteed that your medical professional is element of the network. You will want to make guaranteed that your local hospital is as effectively. The exact is true for pharmacies. Another critical concern is the percentage of premium bucks that are put in to fork out for claims. A great organization will fork out about 80 for each cent of incoming premium bucks out to medical doctors and hospitals and other companies. Any plan that pays under 70 %, except that is inline with the other carriers in your state, is a undesirable insurance plan with buy sole e95.

Need to you get Pregnancy Insurance policies Now?

Not figuring out when or if you could possibly have a pregnancy that is unplanned and when or if you will develop a pre-present situation that may make it complicated to buy an underwritten healthcare insurance coverage may make that a complicated problem. Hopefully that the the write-up you are examining may make it a lot easier to make a additional fully informed choice. But with no the potential to know the upcoming, doing the choice with absolute certainty is not feasible.

(AP) ? Top parties in Egypt's incoming parliament have agreed to select an Islamist politician as house speaker for the first time in decades, party leaders said Monday.

The Muslim Brotherhood, the big winner in the first election since the ousting of President Hosni Mubarak last February, said it joined several other parties in backing Saad el-Katatni, the secretary-general of the Brotherhood's own party.

The main function of the new parliament is to pick a 100-person commission to draw up a new constitution for Egypt, while preparations take place for presidential elections scheduled for June.

The selection of el-Katatni showed the power of the Islamists to influence that process.

The Muslim Brotherhood-led alliance won more than 45 percent of the 498 parliament seats. A more radical Islamist movement won another 25 percent. The two are not seen likely to join forces on many issues because of their religious differences.

On Monday, Brotherhood leaders met with heads of other parties to try to reach wide agreement over the choice of a speaker.

Mohammed Morsi, the Brotherhood party's leader, said the meeting was meant to give assurances that there would be no "exclusions, no polarization and no conflict. Instead there will be national consensus" in parliament.

Mohammed Abouel Ghar, head of secular Egyptian Social Democratic Party, which emerged from the popular uprising, said, "We agreed to have consensus on selection of the heads of subcommittees. Even the small parties and those with only one seat will not be excluded."

Parties like his that represent reformers and activists at the center of the movement that toppled Mubarak failed to parlay that success into voting strength, splitting into several factions and winning less than a quarter of the seats in parliament.

Besides choosing the constitutional commission, the powers of the incoming parliament are limited.

The parliament, set to convene Jan. 23, cannot form a government or request a vote of no confidence, according to an interim charter that transferred Mubarak's powers to the head of the ruling military council.

On Monday, the U.S.-based Human Rights Watch group urged the new parliament to urgently reform laws used to curb freedoms and repress rights.

The group said that the parliament's top priority should be to revise laws that limit association and assembly, allow indefinite detention without charge and shield the police force from accountability.

"Egypt's stalled transition can be revived only if the new parliament dismantles Egypt's repressive legal framework, the toolbox the government has relied on for decades to silence journalists, punish political opponents, and stifle civil society," said Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director at Human Rights Watch.

"Egypt's new political parties need to live up to the promises of the Egyptian uprising by ensuring that no government can ever again trample on the rights of the Egyptian people," she said.

According to Human Rights Watch, the ruling military has relied on existing laws to arrest protesters and journalists and to try more than 12,000 civilians before military courts.

(AP) ? Nigeria labor unions have announced they will suspend their strike over spiraling fuel prices in the oil-rich country.

Nigeria Labor Congress President Abdulwaheed Omar made the announcement Monday.

The decision comes after President Goodluck Jonathan made an offer to put in place partial subsidies to bring down fuel costs. It also comes amid violence in the streets of Lagos as soldiers fired apparent live ammunition and tear gas at protesters.

The strike began Jan. 9, paralyzing the nation of more than 160 million people.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ? For the first time since protests erupted over spiraling fuel prices, soldiers barricaded key roads Monday in Nigeria's two biggest cities as the president offered a concession to stem demonstrations that he said were being stoked by provocateurs seeking anarchy.

Soldiers in Lagos fired apparent live rounds over the heads of several hundred protesters who were walking to a park where demonstrations were held last week ? and where armored personnel carriers and troops awaited on Monday.

The deployment of troops is a sensitive issue in a nation with a young democracy and a history of military coups. President Goodluck Jonathan said in a speech televised early Monday that agitators have hijacked the demonstrations, which were initially focused on his removal of a fuel subsidy but more recently focused on government corruption and inefficiency.

Authorities also targeted some foreign media outlets in Lagos Monday. Officers of the State Security Service, Nigeria's secret police, raided an office compound used by the BBC and CNN, witnesses said. Marilyn Ogar, a secret police spokeswoman, said she had no information about the raid or why it took place.

At a park in Lagos' Ojota neighborhood where more than 20,000 people had demonstrated Friday, two military armored personnel carriers were parked near an empty stage. About 50 soldiers and 50 other security personnel surrounded the area carrying Kalashnikov rifles, waving away those who tried to enter to resume demonstrations. A crowd of several hundred people gathered a few hundreds yards (meters) away.

"They are here because they don't want us to protest," said Remi Odutayo, 25, referring to the soldiers in the park. "They are using the power given to them to do something illegal" by stopping demonstrators from gathering.

A few miles (kilometers) away, about 300 protesters marched on a highway toward Ojota. One waved a white puppy above his head like a protest placard. When they approached a military checkpoint, soldiers slung their Kalasnikov rifles to their sides and let the demonstrators pass unhindered. But then around 20 soldiers arrived in two pickup trucks, bayonets affixed to their assault rifles. They told the protesters to go back. Soldiers fired into the air and tear-gassed the crowd to disperse it.

In Nigeria's second-largest city of Kano, soldiers and police barricaded entrances to protest venues, including a park near a university and a square in the city center. Elsewhere in the country, protesters in Nigeria's capital Abuja said they were harassed by security forces, while others gathered in the central Nigerian city of Kaduna.

Jonathan announced in his speech aired Monday the government would subsidize gasoline prices to immediately reduce the price to about $2.27 a gallon (60 cents a liter). The concession might not be enough to stem outrage over the government's stripping of fuel subsidies on Jan. 1 that kept gas prices low in this oil-rich but impoverished nation. Even with the measure announced Monday, gasoline would still be more than 50 cents a gallon higher than it was just 16 days ago. Most people live on less than $2 a day in Africa's most populous nation. Tens of thousands have marched in cities across the nation to protest that decision.

In Lagos, a city of 15 million, army soldiers set up a checkpoint Monday morning on the main highway that feeds traffic from the mainland into its islands. An AP reporter saw more than 10 soldiers carrying assault rifles and wearing camouflage uniforms. On Ikoyi Island, where some of Nigeria's wealthy live, air force personnel erected roadblocks of metal barricades and debris at a roundabout where more 1,000 protesters had regularly gathered last week. The airmen asked drivers who they were and where they were headed before letting them pass.

At the Lagos headquarters of the Nigeria Labor Congress, some 50 protesters gathered Monday despite requests from union leaders to stay home. Lawyer Bamidele Aturu led the crowd in chants and cheers, comparing the president to military rulers of the past who used soldiers to suppress dissent.

"It's very clear the revolution has begun!" Aturu shouted. However, those gathered looked warily at passing pickup trucks filled with soldiers.

Wearing a traditional black kaftan, Jonathan was alone on camera as he read from a printed speech on state TV.

"It has become clear to government and all well-meaning Nigerians that other interests beyond the implementation of the deregulation policy have hijacked the protest," Jonathan said. "This has prevented an objective assessment and consideration of all the contending issues for which dialogue was initiated by government. These same interests seek to promote discord, anarchy and insecurity to the detriment of public peace."

Jonathan's speech comes after his attempt to negotiate with labor unions failed late Sunday night to avert the strike entering a sixth day. Nigeria Labor Congress President Abdulwaheed Omar said early Monday morning he had ordered workers to stay at home over Jonathan's fears about security.

The strike began Jan. 9, paralyzing the nation of more than 160 million people. The root cause remains gasoline prices: Jonathan's government abandoned subsidies that kept gasoline prices low on Jan. 1, causing prices to spike from $1.70 per gallon (45 cents per liter) to at least $3.50 per gallon (94 cents per liter). The costs of food and transportation also largely doubled.

Anger over losing one of the few benefits average Nigerians see from living in an oil-rich country led to demonstrations across the nation and violence that has killed at least 10 people. Red Cross volunteers have treated more than 600 people injured in protests since the strike began, officials said.

Jonathan and other government officials have argued that removing the subsidies, which are estimated to cost $8 billion a year, would allow the government to spend money on badly needed public projects across a country that has cratered roads, little electricity and a lack of clean drinking water for its inhabitants. However, many remain suspicious of government as military rulers and politicians have plundered government budgets since this African nation won independence from Britain in 1960.

The strike also could cut into oil production in Nigeria, which produces about 2.4 million barrels of crude a day and remains a top energy supplier to the U.S. A major oil workers association threatened Thursday to stop all oil production in Nigeria at midnight Saturday over the continued impasse in negotiations. However, the Nigeria Labor Congress said the association had held off on the threatened production halt.

John Becker: LGBTs for Ron Paul: Huh?

I must confess that I'm truly baffled by the level of support I'm seeing among my friends for presidential candidate Ron Paul. While the number of Paul fans in my circles is relatively small, he nonetheless enjoys the highest level of support from my LGBT-identified and equality-supporting friends out of all the non-LGBT-friendly candidates. In addition, the Ron Paul supporters I know tend to be passionately, often blindly, devoted to their candidate, steamrolling over any criticisms of Paul, no matter how legitimate, and simply dismissing out of hand those they cannot out-argue.

To many people, Ron Paul's sound bites are very appealing. Smaller government. Individual liberty. Legalization of marijuana and other drugs. (Yes, I think this has a lot to do with the support Paul receives, especially among young people and college students.) Unfortunately, it's been my experience that most supporters of Ron Paul stop there and either don't dig any further or ignore the digging done by others. This alarms me, because Ron Paul's record is very, very anti-gay.

On his best days, Ron Paul supports the so-called "states' rights" position regarding marriage equality. On his worst, he has specifically bragged about his efforts to obstruct and attack LGBT people's civil rights and gone out of his way to slander and mischaracterize LGBT people.

Setting aside the generally disturbing deployment of the "states' rights" argument at all, given its shameful history as a justifier of slavery and Jim Crow laws in this country, I'd like to ask Mr. Paul (as well as those who profess to support both Ron Paul and LGBT equality) why LGBT couples should be the only Americans whose marriages are subject to the "states' rights" standard. Why should only LGBT people, but not straight people, have to seek the approval of our state legislatures and/or citizenry in order to marry the people we love? Why should our marriages be the only ones that dissolve when we cross state lines? And why is this an acceptable state of affairs, especially given the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which guarantees equal protection under the law to all American citizens?

"Yeah," many of my Paul-supporting friends will say, "but that's just your opinion."

This brings up another point: the difference between opinion and fact. Maybe it's just me, but in this era of false equivalency memes, it appears as though this distinction is being increasingly overlooked. A fact is something that is empirically true and can be supported by evidence, while an opinion is a belief that may or may not be backed up with some type of evidence, usually taking the form of a subjective statement that can be emotionally based or result from a person's individual interpretation of a fact.

  • FACT: Ron Paul's presidential campaign issued a flyer that boasted about the candidate's efforts to introduce legislation that would remove challenges to the anti-gay Defense of Marriage Act from the federal court system.
  • FACT: Ron Paul's Iowa state director is Mike Heath, a long-term Christian-right activist who formerly served as the board chairman of an SPLC-certified anti-gay hate group known as "Americans for Truth About Homosexuality."
  • FACT: Ron Paul has a long history of racist, homophobic, and anti-Semitic comments.
  • FACT: As state above, Ron Paul supports the so-called "states' rights" approach to marriage, but interestingly, only for LGBT couples.
  • FACT: Ron Paul said, "If I were in Congress in 1996, I would have voted for the Defense of Marriage Act, which used Congress' constitutional authority to define what official state documents other states have to recognize under the Full Faith and Credit Clause, to ensure that no state would be forced to recognize a same-sex marriage license issued in another state."
  • FACT: Ron Paul opposes the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which would prohibit discrimination against employees on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity by civilian, nonreligious employers.

Based on the above examples and so many others, there is no way one can honestly characterize Ron Paul's past statements and record as anything other than anti-gay. Of course, LGBTs and supporters of LGBT equality, like all voters, can and should vote for whomever they choose. I am neither disputing that right nor attempting in any way to tell anyone how to vote. What I am saying, however, is that LGBT and pro-LGBT voters should at least acknowledge that a vote for a candidate like Ron Paul is a vote for someone who opposes their rights.

Duchess of Cambridge???s Fantasy Birthday Gift Wish List (ContributorNetwork)

The Duchess of Cambridge, formerly known as Kate Middleton, will turn 30 years old on Monday. What can a girl get for her birthday who has everything? Here are a few suggestions.

Commonwealth Realms Worldwide Tour

For someone who might like to travel, a trip throughout all 16 of the Commonwealth Realms of the British Monarchy may be in order. There are some fairly luxurious places Middleton and her husband can visit on their jet-setting tour of the realms. In addition to the United Kingdom, the birthday girl may consider trips to several places to alleviate any winter time blues.

She can travel to The Bahamas for some winter-time sunbathing. Australia just began its summer and has some lush tropical destinations for the happy couple. Canada has some prime ski resorts Middleton can enjoy. Members of the royal family, including Prince Harry, love to ski as evidenced by the young prince's recent trip to Switzerland. At least Middleton can make her trip look more official if she visits countries associated with the crown.

Huge Charitable Donations

In light of the tough economic times, the Duchess of Cambridge can accept gifts for her charities that she had decided to patronize. For their wedding, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge invited Britons to donate to their charitable wedding fund. Now that Middleton has her own four charities she belongs to, well-wishers can give money to help support her causes.

Among the beneficiaries of Middleton's time and money are Action on Addiction, East Anglia's Children's Hospices, The Art Room and the National Portrait Gallery in London. Any of these four worthy organizations would love a huge financial lift during the winter months.

Baby News

Only Prince William can give his wife the birthday gift of a baby in their family. Rumors have been swirling for two months that the Duchess of Cambridge is pregnant but no official word has been given. What a wonderful 30th birthday gift it would be if Middleton found out she was pregnant on Jan. 9. It would be even more fantastic news for Britons if they found out on the same day.

No matter what the girl who has everything gets for her birthday, entering her third decade of life is something special to be celebrated.
