NASCAR parade rolls from Ontario to Fontana

ONTARIO- A few hundred people arrived at the Citizens Bank Arena to watch a parade Thursday afternoon.

It wasn't the typical parade however. Instead of floats, there were big rigs, painted with the name of several corporate sponsors.

The NASCAR's Hauler Parade made its way to the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana as people posed for pictures near the rigs and later shot video of the trucks as they pulled out of the lot.

The parade, which consists of the tractor-trailers that carry teams' race equipment, is part of the festivities leading up to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series making its annual trip this weekend to the Speedway.

Sarah Lahmon and her husband Tom were there with family members waiting for the haulers to start their engines and begin their trek out of Ontario.

"I like the diversity of the trucks," Sarah said. "There's a lot of money involved in this."

Tom is more of a fan of the sport than she is. However, it made for an interesting family outing with the big rigs and the races being so accessible from their Eastvale home.

Motor officers and police personnel in squad cars were on hand from Ontario, Fontana, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department and California Highway Patrol to make sure the haulers got to the Speedway safely.

Leann Dehoog and her daughter Maryann Gibson came out for what will be the beginning of their NASCAR adventure.

"We're NASCAR junkies," Dehoog said. "We've got

our tickets, our pit passes,... We will be there from start to finish."

This was the pair's first outing to see the haulers themselves, Dehoog said. Both women found the display enjoyable.

"The cars get all the attention, but without the big rigs, they wouldn't be able to go anywhere," Dehoog said.

After leaving the arena, the parade headed east on Concourse Street to Milliken Avenue, then north on Milliken Avenue to Church Street, east on Church to Day Creek Boulevard, south on Day Creek to Victoria Gardens Lane, east on Victoria Gardens to Base Line Road, east on Base Line to Cherry Avenue and then south on Cherry before finishing at the Speedway, according to a city news release.

Viewing areas will be at the arena, Bass Pro Shops at 7777 Victoria Gardens Lane in Rancho Cucamonga and Auto Club Speedway at 9300 Cherry Ave., Fontana, according to the news release.

NASCAR driver Jamie McMurray was scheduled to make an appearance from 6 to 7 p.m. at Bass Pro Shops.
