FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) ? Arkansas football coach Bobby Petrino was in "stable" condition Monday recovering from injuries suffered in a motorcycle crash, and he is expected to make a full recovery, his family said in a statement released through the university.
Petrino crashed his motorcycle after veering off a two-lane highway near the town of Crosses Sunday night, state police said Monday. State police spokesman Bill Sadler said the Razorbacks coach was taken to a hospital for treatment, but he declined to say which hospital or whether Petrino was still there on Monday.
The university issued a news release Monday confirming the crash that included a statement from Petrino's family.
"Coach Petrino was involved in a motorcycle accident on Sunday evening that involved no other individuals," the statement said. "He is in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery. Our family appreciates respect for our privacy during the recovery and we are grateful for the thoughts of Razorback fans at this time."
The statement said Arkansas athletics director Jeff Long had been in contact with the Petrino family and that he would consult with the family before providing any additional information at a later time.
Neither Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville or Northwest Medical Center in Springdale would confirm Petrino was a patient, but one spokesman noted that patients have the option to keep their names unlisted.
State police spokesman Bill Sadler said earlier Monday that the crash happened Sunday night on Arkansas Highway 16 in Madison County near Crosses, a community in northwest Arkansas about 20 miles from Fayetteville, where the school is located. Sadler said Petrino's motorcycle left the highway and crashed.
Sadler said Petrino was taken to a hospital in Washington County, but he declined to say which one. He said he didn't know the coach's condition or whether he was still hospitalized Monday.
Petrino, an avid motorcycle enthusiast, led Arkansas to an 11-2 record last season and a Cotton Bowl win over Kansas State. He's 34-17 in four seasons at the school, 21-5 over the last two.
He's talked in the past about owning a motorcycle and going for rides around nearby Beaver Lake.
The noted offensive coach has led the Razorbacks to the top passing offense in the Southeastern Conference over the past three seasons. He's helped develop former Arkansas and current New England Patriots quarterback Ryan Mallett and last season's first-team All-SEC quarterback Tyler Wilson.
Prior to Arkansas, Petrino coached the NFL's Atlanta Falcons. He left the Falcons after 13 games in the 2007 season to join the Razorbacks.
Petrino was a college head coach at Louisville before that, guiding the Cardinals to a 41-9 record from 2003-07.
