Posted Aug. 31, 2012, at 6:03 a.m.

There are a lot plenty of American homeowners who cannot get conventional help with their underwater homes. The solution for them is The Home Affordable Refinance program 2.0 of 2012. This government mortgage program will try to help more homeowners across the country especially in areas which are more hit by declining real estate values. This program is a way out for underwater homeowners to refinance their mortgages into the current low interest rates. You can also get some of the benefits of The Home Affordable Refinance Plan 2.0.

The program covers homeowners who have very little equity in their homes or whose homes have high negative equity. The earlier programs could not help them because they were not either owned or guaranteed by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, no defaults and being underwater more than 125%. Am i eligible for the Home Affordable Refinance Plan 2.0? To make more changes the federal housing finance agency has granted additional benefits to stabilize the home market.

Who can qualify for The Home Affordable Refinance program 2.0? In order for you to enjoy the benefits your refinance will carry out permanent changes with all the terms of your mortgage. The new modified monthly payments will become affordable. Can i get The Home Affordable Refinance program 2.0 of 2012? The HARP 2.0 Refinance Program is especially structured with more relaxed requirements to qualify for a mortgage refinance.

Any homeowner with an underwater mortgage whether current or not current stands a good chance to benefit from this program. The main aim of harp 2.0 is to help those homeowners to get a lower interest rate and a lower monthly payment. The harp 2.0 is for mortgages other than Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. You do not require submitting your income proof. The sole aim is to increase the stability of your home and have relaxed qualifying requirements at: HARP 2.0 .

'Freedom is fabulous': Two GOP gay groups make waves in Tampa

Homocon invite (GOProud)TAMPA--An older gentleman in a sparkling cowboy suit and matching hat made out of sequins gazed at a pair of buff male go-go dancers wearing tight jeans and skimpy tank tops that read "Freedom Is Fabulous." That was the scene at a local gay bar called "The Honeypot" on Tuesday night. More than 800 Republican delegates along with members of the local Tampa gay community and reporters clustered to listen to the colorful conservative gay group GOProud make the case for electing Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan.

"This is the largest event hosted by a gay group at any Republican convention," GOProud Executive Director Jimmy LaSalvia shouted at the crowd during a brief speech at the party, called "Homocon."

"Not that size matters," he added, to laughter, "But ours is the biggest."

If you sense a hint of competition in the statement, you'd be right. GOProud often needles the older, more established gay conservative group, The Log Cabin Republicans, by emphasizing that GOProud is the "only" gay group to have endorsed Mitt Romney. They hint that Log Cabin is the stodgy uncle figure in the very small world of gay conservative groups.

"Have you been to any of their events?" LaSalvia asked, looking smooth in a suit and purple tie on Wednesday. "Womp-womp."

"Our focus is very much within the grassroots of the conservative movement." he explained. "They are very establishment." LaSalvia and GOProud cofounder Christopher Barron are both former Log Cabin staffers. They left after neither was selected for the organization's top job a few years ago, and started GOProud in 2009.

Yahoo News has in fact attended a Log Cabin event. On Sunday, the group held a welcome cocktail hour hosted by three local chapters at the "Rusty Pelican," an ocean-front eatery. Fred Karger, a gay rights activist and long time Republican operative who launched a failed bid for the GOP presidential nod last fall, and Sandy Steen, the 73-year-old vice president of the Broward County Log Cabin Republican chapter, chatted in a corner at the party.

"Fred ran for president!" Steen said. "He was at our home and Log Cabin gave him a contribution."

"My first and most generous," said Karger.

"My husband and I are fiscal conservatives and social moderates," Steen said. "In this?country everyone is entitled to equal rights."

"How do you argue with that?" Karger asked.

Both Karger and Steen said they were disappointed with the Republican Party platform, officially adopted on Tuesday, which calls for a constitutional amendment that would bar gay couples from obtaining civil marriages, even in states that allow it. Mitt Romney signed a pledge during the primary that embraces the same plank.

"They need to lighten up!" said Steen. "I'm just a little distressed that the tea party has so much influence."

LaSalvia and Barron frequently note that GOProud is the only gay group to have endorsed Mitt Romney--the Log Cabin Republicans are still mulling over the decision--and paint themselves as the more truly conservative group.

But one thing both groups agree pretty strongly on is that gay people should be allowed to marry each other, and the Republican Party seems pretty far away from that point; meanwhile, the Democrats plan to adopt that stance in their platform next week. Romney adviser Kris Kobach argued at the RNC platform committee meeting last week that it's all right for the government to bar gay marriage and civil unions even from a limited government viewpoint. "Our government routinely judges situations where you might regard people completely affecting themselves like, for example, the use of controlled substances, like, for example, polygamy that is voluntarily entered into," he said. "We condemn those activities even though they're not hurting other people, at least directly." Kobach's view won the day in the platform.

But leaders of both groups seem upbeat about their prospects and secure in their own place in their party and at the convention. LaSalvia says GOProud is about "showing there are gay conservatives within the conservative movement and showing the conservative movement publicly [embraces] gay conservatives." And the number of political operatives and media figures (including anti-tax activist Grover Norquist and? chair of the Tea Party Express Amy Kremer) who attended "Homocon" shows that a Republican gay bar party--which would have sounded like an oxymoron only a few years ago--isn't that big of a deal now. In 1996, Bob Dole's team returned a campaign check from Log Cabin. Today, some national Republicans, especially in the Northeast and Mountain West, actively seek the group's endorsement.

But even so, not everyone in the conservative movement has been welcoming. In 2010 and 2011, GOProud opened up a rift among conservative groups by co-sponsoring the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). Social conservatives boycotted CPAC in retaliation, and eventually GOProud was purged from sponsorship this year. LaSalvia says being kicked out of CPAC has given the group an opportunity to explore other ways to make a difference, including hosting Homocon.

"I fully understand the many folks who say how can you be a gay Republican?" said Log Cabin's Pick, at the Sunday event, citing some on the right who question gay people's rights to raise families and not be discriminated against at work. "It is sometimes a difficult thing, but as someone who is a fiscal conservative I am a Republican. You run down the list of core conservative values and they describe me. Including conservative family values."

"I don't think that responsibility, commitment, fidelity and raising responsible children without the intervention of government are things that apply only to heterosexuals," Pick said. "You can be gay and believe all those things. I do."

Consumer spending posts biggest rise in five months

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. consumer spending got off to a fairly firm start in the third quarter, rising by the most in five months and offering hope economic growth would pick up this quarter.

Other data on Thursday showed the number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits held steady last week.

The reports were consistent with only moderate economic and job growth, and they kept alive the prospect of additional monetary stimulus from the Federal Reserve.

"The economy does not seem to be faltering or going into reverse," said Chris Rupkey, chief financial economist at Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi in New York. "(But) for a Fed that thinks the economy is not good enough, the data today is not consistent with 3 percent-plus growth or a falling unemployment rate."

Officials at the central bank are debating whether a third round of bond purchases is warranted to spur a stronger recovery, and investors will look to a speech by Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke on Friday for clues on the Fed's next step.

The Commerce Department said consumer spending increased 0.4 percent in July after a flat reading in June. The rise was in line with economists' expectations.

With a gauge of prices holding steady, spending was also up 0.4 percent on an inflation-adjusted basis, which was also the largest increase since February.

While separate reports from U.S. retailers indicated some of the spending momentum carried into August, economists expect spending to cool a bit in the months ahead because of sluggish income growth and a recent rise in gasoline prices.

A range of retail outlets from Costco Wholesale Corp to Limited Brands Inc posted better-than-expected sales gains.

"There was some pent up demand after soft spending through the second quarter," said Robert Dye, chief economist at Comerica in Dallas. "What we are going to need to see is consumer confidence holding its own and moderate job growth for that to continue through the third quarter. Those two key issues are still in doubt."

The Labor Department said first-time applications for state unemployment benefits were unchanged last week at 374,000. The four-week moving average for new claims, a better measure of labor market trends, rose 1,500 to 370,250 - a level economists views as consistent with only sluggish hiring.

Stocks on Wall Street fell as investors turned defensive ahead of Bernanke's speech, while Treasury debt prices rose. The dollar moved up against a basket of currencies.

LABOR MARKET KEY

The level of new claims last week was 10,000 above where it stood at the beginning of the month, suggesting job growth moderated. In July employers had added 163,000 workers, which was a sharp step up from June, when the economy created only 64,000 new jobs.

Even though data on consumer spending and housing suggest economic activity picked up early in the third quarter, business spending is weakening and inflation is slowing.

The jobless rate, which ticked up to 8.3 percent in July, has been stuck above 8 percent for more than three years, the first time this has happened since the Great Depression.

With the labor market not showing decisive improvement, the question of whether the Fed will ease monetary policy further at its September 12-13 policy meeting remains firmly on the table. Atlanta Fed Bank President James Lockhart told CNBC the central bank's decision would be a "close call."

A Reuters poll of fund managers found that only 44 percent think the Fed will announce a third round of bond purchases in September, down from 70 percent last month before July's employment data was released.

The pickup in consumer spending was a welcome bit of news that buttressed the case of hawks at the central bank who think monetary policy has already done enough.

In the second quarter, consumption had expanded at the slowest pace in a year, helping to hold back economic growth to a modest 1.7 percent annual rate.

Others at the central bank could argue that with inflation slowing, there is room to act to spur more vigorous growth.

A price index for personal spending was flat after edging up 0.1 percent in June. In the 12 months through July, this index was up just 1.3 percent -- the smallest gain since October 2009.

A core measure that strips out food and energy costs also held steady last for the first time since September. Over the past 12 month, it has risen 1.6 percent, the least since October.

The Fed aims for inflation of 2 percent. Both the overall and core indexes have been below that target since March, a factor some analysts said could tip the balance toward more easing in the debate at the central bank.

"The Fed is now in danger of falling short on its price stability mandate," said Jeremy Lawson, a senior economist at BNP Paribas in New York. "At the margin, this will make it easier for the doves to make the case for the need to launch a new asset purchase program in September."

Last month, household income increased 0.3 percent after rising by the same margin in June. Income available to households after stripping out inflation and taxes increased 0.3 percent after gaining 0.2 percent in June.

With spending a touch above income growth, the saving rate slipped to 4.2 percent in July from 4.3 percent the prior month.

Magnetic vortex reveals key to spintronic speed limit

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? he evolution of digital electronics is a story of miniaturization -- each generation of circuitry requires less space and energy to perform the same tasks. But even as high-speed processors move into handheld smart phones, current data storage technology has a functional limit: magnetically stored digital information becomes unstable when too tightly packed. The answer to maintaining the breath-taking pace of our ongoing computer revolution may be the denser, faster, and smarter technology of spintronics.

Spintronic devices use electron spin, a subtle quantum characteristic, to write and read information. But to mobilize this emerging technology, scientists must understand exactly how to manipulate spin as a reliable carrier of computer code. Now, scientists at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory have precisely measured a key parameter of electron interactions called non-adiabatic spin torque that is essential to the future development of spintronic devices. Not only does this unprecedented precision -- the findings to be published in the journal Nature Communications on August 28 -- guide the reading and writing of digital information, but it defines the upper limit on processing speed that may underlie a spintronic revolution.

"In the past, no one was able to measure the spin torque accurately enough for detailed comparisons of experiment and mathematical models," said Brookhaven Lab physicist Yimei Zhu. "By precisely imaging the spin orbits with a dedicated transmission electron microscope at Brookhaven, we advanced a truly fundamental understanding that has immediate implications for electronic devices. So this is quite exciting."

Speed Limits

Most prevailing technology fails to take full advantage of the electron, which features intrinsic quantum variables beyond the charge and flow driving electricity. One of these, a parameter known as spin direction, can be strategically manipulated to function as a high-density medium to store and transmit information in spintronics. But as any computer scientist can attest, dense data can mean very little without enough speed to process it efficiently.

"One of the big reasons that people want to understand this non-adiabatic spin torque term, which describes the ability to transfer spin via electrical currents, is that it basically determines how fast spintronic devices can be," said Shawn Pollard, a physics Ph.D. student at Brookhaven Lab and Stony Brook University and the lead author of the paper. "The read and write speed for data is dictated by the size of this number we measured, called beta, which is actually very, very big. That means the technology is potentially very, very fast."

Building a Vortex

Consider the behavior of coffee stirred rapidly in a mug: the motion of a spoon causes the liquid to spin, rising along the edges and spiraling low in the center. Because the coffee can't escape through the mug's porcelain walls, the trapped energy generates the cone-like vortex in the center. A similar phenomenon can be produced on magnetic materials to reveal fundamental quantum measurements.

This color graphic, seen here above an actual image of the vortex core captured by the transmission electron microscope, shows the trapped spins moving around the permalloy sample, which then generate the conical vortex core rising out of the center.

The Brookhaven physicists applied a range of high-frequency electric currents to a patterned film called permalloy, useful for its high magnetic permeability. This material, 50 nanometers (billionths of a meter) thick and composed of nickel and iron, was designed to strictly contain any generated magnetic field. Unable to escape, trapped electron spins combine and spiral within the permalloy, building into an observable and testable phenomenon called a magnetic vortex core.

"The vortex core motion is actually the cumulative effect of three distinct energies: the magnetic field induced by the current, and the adiabatic and non-adiabatic spin torques generated by electrons," Zhu said. "By capturing images of this micrometer (millionth of a meter) effect, we can deduce the precise value of the non-adiabatic torque's contribution to the vortex, which plays out on the nanoscale. Other measurements had very high error, but our technique offered the spatial resolution necessary to move past the wide range of previous results."

Disk Density

The high-speed, high-density hard drives in today's computers write information into spinning disks of magnetic materials, using electricity to toggle between magnetic polarity states that correspond to the "1" or "0" of binary computer code. But a number of intrinsic problems emerge with this method of data storage, notably limits to speed because of the spinning disk, which is made less reliable by moving parts, significant heat generation, and the considerable energy needed to write and read information.

Beyond that, magnetic storage suffers from a profound scaling issue. The magnetic fields in these devices exert influence on surrounding space, a so-called fringing field. Without appropriate space between magnetic data bits, this field can corrupt neighboring bits of digital information by inadvertently flipping "1" into "0." This translates to an ultimate limit on scalability, as these data bits need too much room to allow endless increases in data density.

Nanowire Racetracks

One pioneering spintronic prototype is IBM's Racetrack memory, which uses spin-coherent electric current to move magnetic domains, or discrete data bits, along a permalloy wire about 200 nanometers across and 100 nanometers thick. The spin of these magnetic domains is altered as they pass over a read/write head, forming new data patterns that travel back and forth along the nanowire racetrack. This process not only yields the prized stability of flash memory devices, but also offers speed and capacity exceeding disk drives.

"It takes less energy to manipulate spin torque parameters than magnetic fields," said Pollard. "There's less crosstalk between databits, and less heat is generated as information is written and read in spin-based storage devices. We measured a major component critical to unlocking the potential of spintronic technology, and I hope our work offers deeper insight into the fundamental origin of this non-adiabatic term."

The new measurement pins down a fundamental limit on data manipulation speeds, but the task of translating this work into practical limits on processor speed and hard drive space will fall to the scientists and engineers building the next generation of digital devices.

Zhu and Pollard collaborated with two physicists specializing in nanomagnetism, Kristen Buchanan of Colorado State University and Dario Arena of Brookhaven's National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS), to push the precision capabilities of the transmission electron microscope. This research was conducted at Brookhaven Lab's Department of Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science, and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science.

Learn Some Of The Simple Steps Of Home Improvement ...

Buying used chairs with bad upholstery on the seat portion isn?t all bad. A lot of times, you can easily remove the seat, take out the staples holding the stretched fabric across the cushion and switch it out. You can mix match any fabric of your choice, and staple it back to the bottom with a heavy duty stapler.

In order to save money on air conditioning costs during the summer, try installing ceiling fans. Ceiling fans recirculate air within a room, cooling it down without the need for turning on a central air system. They are relatively easy to install and can be installed in place of your lighting fixture.

If you are planning on painting a room as part of a home improvement project, you can save money by accurately estimating the amount of paint you will need. One gallon of paint will cover about 350 square feet of wall space, unless you are painting drywall, which absorbs more paint. An accurate estimate can prevent you from overbuying paint, which once mixed in a specific color generally can?t be returned.

When looking to save money on energy, adding new energy efficient fixtures is an easy home improvement that can be done without a contractor. Adding energy efficient ceiling fan will not only add beauty, but will cut down on your cooling cost. Simply trading out your old incandescent bulbs to more energy efficient fluorescent ones can save you on energy costs.

Think about saving money for a little longer to buy more energy-efficient products and materials for your home-improvement project. This will save you money over time on heating and electric bills which will pay for the renovations you make in no time. Consider long-term gains over short-term savings.

Here is a home improvement for working with contractors! If you are having work done, be sure to inform the head of the crew if you are not happy! In the ideal world, everyone would understand and do exactly what you want, the way you want it done! If that is not the case, speak to the head of the crew! You are paying the bills, and you are in charge. If you aren?t happy, speak up. If things don?t work out with that contractor, there are lots of others to choose from.

Begin your home improvement projects in the kitchen, where owners can see up to a 500% return on their investment. To give the room a fresh, clean look, paint the cabinets white and replace the hardware. Also focus on the counters; stay away from tile and purchase granite or imitation stone.

If you are suffering the wrath of owning a small bedroom, you can create an optical illusion making it seem larger than it is. Repainting your room in light green or blue can create a feeling of more ?space?. You can also incorporate colors such as off white or beige, but they won?t feel as comfortable or warm as the other colors would.

If you are new to home improvement, it is important that you get the knowledge you need. Oftentimes, if you have colleagues or friends that know what they are doing when it comes to home improvement, they would be more than willing to help you with the information you need or help you in the actual process itself.

Never try to do electrical or plumbing work yourself regardless of how easy the job may seem. Hire a professional to do the job, and make sure that they have all of the appropriate licenses that your state requires. If you don?t verify that you may end up with a badly done job and no recourse.

Measure dimensions when getting materials then measure again. You want to be sure that when you are getting new materials, you are double checking the size of the area that you need to cover with these materials. Sometimes the first reading is a little off and it takes a couple tries to make sure just what dimensions you are working with. You can never be too careful.

To save yourself time and trouble on future maintenance when you do any home improvement, remove water heaters from your attic. While attic water heaters save space, they are difficult to maintain and offer the significant danger of ruining your ceilings (at the very least), if they ever leak. Relocating your water heater into a close,t costs very little space and adds, peace of mind.

If you?re trying to improve the look of your kitchen or bathroom, consider installing a colorful back splash. You can purchase colorful tiles for really cheap. If you have the skills to install the tile by yourself, you will save money by not having to hire someone to do the work for you.

When you are making improvements to your home, don?t be afraid to ask for help as soon as you can. The sooner you ask for help, the sooner you can get assistance with your home renovation project. If you wait too long and ask for assistance in the middle of a home renovation project, you may not get the help you need when you need it.

If you need to hire someone, get personal recommendations from friends, family and neighbors who have had work done in the recent past. This is a good way to gather information about contractors who can do the job. When you get quotes, ask that they are itemized so you can compare the contractors apples to apples.

There are times when a home owner will take on a project which is beyond their ability. In this case do-it-yourself home improvement can end up costing more than a contractor would have charged in the first place. As this article helped you see it is always wise to do some research and get professional advice before taking on a home improvement project.

Headlining the pack, the N750 Premium Edition router you're looking at above upgrades the original N750 through a better ability to play with others: the dual-band WiFi hotspot's ReadyShare file access expands to the cloud, while its USB support now envelops Apple's AirPrint and Time Machine as well as TiVo Storage. Media sharing mavens also get their own, more specific add-ons. The Powerline Media Extender can pipe audio (and USB printing or storage) over a 200Mbps link, with a major emphasis on AirPlay streaming; the N900 4-port WiFi Adapter is a slightly less exotic, 450Mbps wireless-to-Ethernet bridge for multi-device home theaters. If Netgear's refresh is tempting enough to prompt a trade-up, you can snag the N750 Premium Edition immediately for $120 or wait until September and October for the respective launches of the N900 adapter for $80 and the Powerline Music Extender in its single pack ($99) or dual-device starter kit ($139) editions.

Home Improvements: How not to do it yourself | DeadlineNews.Com

More than 1 million Americans a year wind up in the emergency room due to injuries related to home improvements, including garden care and maintenance, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

That?s often because the job is over their head, in more ways than one.

In an effort to save money, the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) says do-it-yourself (DIY) homeowners often underestimate the necessary physical strength, agility, skills and time necessary to get the job done.

DIYers also often overlook the scope of the job, don?t always know which set of tools to use for a given job, nor do they have the skills to use them. On-the-job power tool training without an instructor is foolhardy and dangerous.

The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) devised a 17-point quiz, ?Home Improvement Projects: Do It Yourself Or Hire A Professional?? to help keep you out of harm?s way.

If you don?t cheat, it will teach you what you know and don?t know about home improvements and what home improvements you likely can and can?t do.

There?s a lot of harm that could get in the way if you don?t hire a professional when you should.

Epic do-it-yourself failures

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, there are more than 164,000 emergency room-treated injuries related to ladders alone. CPSC?s 2011 Annual Report to the President and Congress reported 356,019 injuries related to home workshop apparatus, tools and attachments; 336,747 related to yard and garden equipment and 156,245 injuries related to home and family maintenance products.

Those were reported incidents.

Major insurer Allstate says there are at least five home improvements best left to the professionals.

? Gas appliances. Mistakes can be explosive.

? Roofing.
Falls can kill. Even minor repairs, like cleaning gutters, should never be done without someone to steady the ladder.

? Asbestos.
This is a hazardous material. Stiff laws regulate asbestos removal. Improper removal can allow toxic materials to become airborne. Your neighbors will then see you in court.

? Electrical. Shocking mishaps can cause your home to go up in smoke and send you singed to the emergency room ? or worse.

? Plumbing.
You may get away with replacing toilet tank parts even fixtures, but re-plumbing, extending water lines or re-routing sewer pipes can leave your home underwater ? even if the property is worth more than your mortgage balance.

(AP) ? Defending U.S. Open champion Samantha Stosur says she's never done a biceps curl in her life.

Yet the 28-year-old Australian with the impressive arms is among the fittest women on the WTA tour.

After overcoming Lyme disease and viral meningitis during a 10-month layoff in 2007-08, she focused on fitness in her return to tennis. She switched from a successful doubles career (23 titles, 4 majors) to singles and won her first Grand Slam title last year by dominating Serena Williams in 73 minutes at Flushing Meadows.

The self-described "foodie" loves Japanese cuisine and admired Steffi Graf while growing in Adelaide. The snorkeling buff who doesn't like to fly prefers running on the beach or boxing in the parks Down Under to stay fit. Otherwise, Stosur is based in Tampa, Fla., where last week she practiced for three days in 90-degree heat to prepare for Monday's start of the U.S. Open.

Stosur shares her workout regime, favorite foods and how to perfect that nasty kick serve.

___

BIG GUNS

Stosur withstood the rain delays caused by Hurricane Irene, court changes and the longest match in U.S. Open women's singles history during the 2011 event. Fitness certainly played a part in her 3 hour, 16 minute win over Nadia Petrova to reach the fourth round. That's a long way from early 2008, when she was rehabbing from Lyme disease and limited to a 20-minute walk every other day. Her booming serves and heavy topspin forehands keep opponents on the run. Stosur says her physique is part genetics, offseason workouts and just pounding tennis balls. "Obviously the gym work helps, but I haven't tried to isolate my arms."

___

FITNESS ROUTINE

Stosur says strong legs and core are important in tennis because of the quick bursts of speed and lateral movement. Her workouts include biking, weights and stretch-band exercises for her serving shoulder, and she has access to a fitness trainer, massage therapist and sports psychologist. Stosur practices tennis drills and points on the court, followed by stretching and cardio for 30 minutes or 45 minutes of weights on alternate days. During the two-month offseason "you can make good gains with endurance, speed or strength." In Tampa last week, Stosur and coach Dave Taylor focused on tennis only and downed 72 bottles of water over three days of practice in high humidity.

___

SUSHI, PLEASE

At 5-foot-7 and 143 pounds, Stosur doesn't feel she needs to restrict her diet, given all the exercise. She eats a lot of fish and sushi, taking in the cultures and cuisines of various countries during the WTA season. The tour starts in Australia in January, moves through France, Thailand, Qatar, Mexico and Malaysia before hitting 22 other counties en route to the season-ending championships in October in Bulgaria. She likes to be "adventurous" and prefers a balanced approach versus Novak Djokovic's gluten-free diet, for example. She returns to favorite restaurants around the world and enjoys yakitori, noodles and Mexican dishes.

___

LEG WORK

While Stosur says she couldn't do a chin-up until recently, she can squat nearly 200 pounds. She works on lunges and dynamic movement, staying away from weight machines. She uses "a lot of dumbbells and Swiss balls" for balance and core exercises. Stosur, who sprained her left ankle in February before a quarterfinal match in Doha, prefers riding the stationary bike because it avoids wear and tear on the feet and joints. Interval cycling spikes the heart rate, which also occurs during long, high-intensity points on the court. She has focused on leg strength the last two years because moving out wide to a ball requires stability and "knowing you can hit a good shot and not be on the defensive."

___

KICK SERVE

Stosur and Serena Williams are among the few women strong enough to use the kick serve. It bounces high and away from the returner, leading to many easy points. Stosur used it to reach the French Open semifinals, her best showing in the Grand Slams this year after losing in the first round of the Australian Open and second round of Wimbledon. She practiced it soon after getting a tennis racket for Christmas at age 8. The key is "don't throw it too far behind" your head and "get up and swing at 100 percent pace." Use a strong wrist motion and brush under the ball, hitting from bottom left to the top right. It's even better if done "with a good bit of disguise on the ball toss."

Syria sectarian divide turns to fear and flight

BEIRUT (AP) ? Abu Qais, a Sunni Muslim in Syria's capital Damascus, says six members of his extended family have been killed by gunmen who belong to the minority Alawite sect of President Bashar Assad.

The gunmen who grabbed one of his distant cousins called up his family while they were torturing him "so they could hear his screams," said Abu Qais, an anti-Assad activist who spoke on condition his full name not be used for fear of reprisals.

Sectarian slayings between Syria's Sunni majority and the Alawite minority have been a brutal reality of Syria's 17-month-old conflict, and they have only accelerated as the country falls into outright civil war. Sunnis have largely backed the uprising against Assad's rule, while the Alawites ? members of an offshoot of Shiism ? have firmly stood behind the regime, where they fill the leadership ranks.

And as tit-for-tat killings have swelled, so has the segregation of the two communities as they flee each other. In Damascus and other cities, Sunnis and Alawites avoid venturing into each other's neighborhoods for fear of being snatched. Some Alawite districts in the capital are now ringed with checkpoints manned not only by security forces but also residents who have taken up arms to protect their homes.

Those in mixed neighborhoods flee their homes to move into safer enclaves dominated by their community ? whether in the same city or in another part of the country.

"Mutual threats in Damascus have succeeded in triggering migration," said Fateh Jamous, an Alawite activist from Latakia, the Mediterranean coastal city where many Alawites have fled. Latakia itself has so far represented a sort of tense neutral ground ? its population is about half Sunni, half Alawite. "That created a sort of balance of terror. So far, it has been generally peaceful," he said by telephone from Latakia.

The flight raises the grim possibility that Syria could go down the path of neighboring Iraq. There, violence in 2006 and 2007 effectively turned into a sort of sectarian cleansing, as Shiite and Sunni militias and insurgents targeted members of the rival community, killing thousands and sending hundreds of thousands fleeing their homes. To this day, Baghdad remains largely divided between wholly Shiite and wholly Sunni districts with few mixed areas remaining.

Syria has not yet reached that scale. But the prospect of it breaking up along religious or ethnic lines is no longer a remote possibility in a conflict that activists estimate has killed 20,000 people as Assad's regime tries to crush rebels determined to topple him. Kurds in the northeast have begun rumbling with talk of self-rule. Alawites have been pulling back into their ancestral heartland, along the Mediterranean coast and in the nearby mountains.

Some anti-regime activists believe that two reported massacres of Sunnis earlier this year, in the towns of Houla in May and Qubeir in June, aimed to drive Sunnis out of areas near main routes to the coast to ensure control of the Alawite enclave.

But the tearing apart of the two communities has been taking place on a smaller but increasing scale, neighborhood by neighborhood and city by city.

Their coexistence has always been uneasy. Sunnis make up the vast majority of Syria's 23 million people, and Alawites about 15 percent of the population. For the past 40 years, the Assad family's regime has enforced a secular ideology that zealously marketed the notion of equality among the nation's many religious and ethnic groups.

But at the same time, it was promoting the Alawite community to which the Assad family belongs.

Alawites, who had traditionally been among the poorest in Syria, were brought in by the Assads to fill the regime's leadership, elevating them into an elite class that had historically been Sunni. Top positions in the army, police and security agencies were given to Alawite men, while their women typically worked in the government. Significantly, inter-marriages between Sunnis and Alawites have been rare, though Assad himself is married to a British-raised Sunni who hails from the central city of Homs.

In Damascus' mostly Sunni neighborhood of Mazzeh, a resident named Moaz nostalgically remembers the woods that once stood on a hill close to his home. Then, years ago, the trees were cut down, and apartment blocs went up to house Alawites taking positions in the military and government. Their area, built within the Mazzeh area to promote an image of integration, became known as Mazzeh-86.

"Our relation with them was like a cold peace, 'We mind our own business and you mind yours'," recalled Moaz, a 28-year-old anti-Assad activist. He spoke on condition his full name not be used to protect himself and his family from reprisals.

Now the two areas are virtually at war. Alawites from Mazzeh-86 frequently help put down protests by Sunnis in the larger district, beating up protesters outside mosques alongside security forces. Checkpoints divide the two areas. In Sunni Mazzeh, there have been numerous slayings of those believed to be informers for the government, both Alawites and Sunnis, said Moaz.

"People with coastal accents (Alawites) are instantly recognized. They are arrogant and sure of themselves," he said.

Damascus had been largely unaffected by the fighting raging elsewhere in the country, until last month when rebels staged a major offensive in the city of 1.7 million people, sparking a heavy regime counter-attack. As the fighting raged, sectarian violence increased. So far, it has been concentrated in poor or lower middle-class neighborhoods of the capital, while most upscale districts remain peaceful, residents and activists say.

Alawites, who by some estimates make up 30 percent of Damascus' residents, have fled neighborhoods where they make up a small minority, finding relative security elsewhere where Alawite numbers are higher, residents and activists say. Many Alawite men send their families to their home villages near the coast.

"Most Alawites are in this with the view that it is a life or death war for them," said another Damascus resident by Skype. Identifying himself only as a "native Syrian" ? refusing to give his sectarian allegiance ? he said checkpoints outside Alawite neighborhoods have been beefed up in recent weeks, with up to 15 or 20 heavily armed security men and residents staffing them.

"The Alawites think that they would be subjected to genocide if Assad goes," he said.

Sectarian violence has been rampant in Homs, a major center of the revolt that was subjected to a devastating government siege earlier this year. Residents and activists say its population has been effectively divided into two sections, with Sunnis in one side and Alawites and Christians in the other.

Mohammed Saleh, a Homs resident and a rare Alawite who actively works with the opposition, says several months ago two Sunni men showed up at his apartment and ordered him to pack up and leave in 10 days.

"I made calls. I spoke to many of my friends and contacts in Homs and elsewhere. I was able to stay," Saleh, reached by telephone in Homs, said. But Saleh's son, who had been living with him, left with his wife and kids to an Alawite part of the city.

"I am never leaving," said Saleh, a trained chemist now making a living selling solar energy systems for household use, in huge demand because of lengthy power cuts. His work takes him across the entire city, but he never travels alone. "I make a point of taking with me someone from the neighborhood I am going to. Even if it is an Alawite district, I still go with a resident from there."

Some of Saleh's closest friends and neighbors have not been so lucky.

"In December and January alone, I lost a friend who was a Sunni doctor, another who was a Shiite engineer and a third one who was an Alawite army officer," said Saleh.

The working relationship between school staff and parents of children with autism spectrum disorders is critical to the children?s success in school and can be a source of tremendous stress at the beginning of the school year when parents are not familiar with the school staff.

Cathy Pratt

Cathy Pratt

Cathy Pratt, director of the Indiana Resource Center for Autism at the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community at Indiana University, provided numerous tips?earlier this summer geared toward helping children with autism begin their school year well and also for helping teachers and school staff understand the children?s needs.

Her tips included a form that parents can fill out detailing specific information about learning styles, communication systems, medical issues, behavior supports and other topics.?Pratt encourages parents to share the information with relevant staff including cafeteria workers, custodians, bus drivers, the school secretary, the school nurse, and administrators.

This week I learned of another useful resource for school staff and anyone who cares for or knows someone with autism spectrum disorders ?? this includes caregivers, first responders and medical providers.? The HANDS in Autism Interdisciplinary Training and Resource Center is distributing a DVD titled ?What Is Autism??

The free 23-minute video features several individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, portraying their stories and successes due in large part to the perseverance, planning and support of their families and caregivers.
